Small Art Car "The Irreducible" seeks a new owner (free)
Our art car/mutant vehicle has lost its storage and custodian on the playa. I haven't been able to make it out to the playa for several years though hope to return again. However, this lovely vehicle, first built by a campmate and bequested to me after his death, needs somebody new. It had an accide...

Re: 2018 Exodus / Traffic, stories
I remember years when there could be quite a backup, caused by people pulling off and on, though mostly for gasoline. BMOrg started reminding people in the survival guide to tank up before going to the playa so you would not need to do so on the way out, but I presume in order to keep good relations...

Re: 2018 Exodus / Traffic, stories
Based on conversations with lots of burners, and lots of posts here over the years, I have to say I am doubtful the idea that exodus is a desired "part of your burn experience" is a popular one. In fact there are those who count it as a major factor towards not going. There is another completely pra...

I've never seen them release much at all. You track this pretty closely, I would appreciate your knowledge on what you have seen get reported. By PM if you prefer. But last chat I had, they had minimal data. It's almost entirely a volunteer effort over there, and it's hard to get volunteers on the d...

Re: Is theft common?
I hear you. What I was trying to say is that there is no need to imagine any reasonable motive. Sadly, the overwhelmingly likely explanation is they were scumbags. It is tremendously saddening to see something like this make somebody give up and go home. For most of us our experiences of the communi...

Re: 2018 Exodus / Traffic, stories
I must say I am baffled that anybody would think I was assuming any of those things. This has been a topic of discussion for many years, going back to the prior decade and they had not done it in the past. It's been a couple of years since the last discussions so they certainly could have done some ...

Re: 2018 Exodus / Traffic, stories
I have recommended to Exodus that they should simply put out a request that people run a GPS logger app on their phone during exodus, which would give a complete track of speeds, locations and times for the thousands of burners who would do so. There would then be no speculation on what exit times a...

Re: Is theft common?
My guess is that it was assumed you'd abandoned your camp. On a Wednesday? I don't think there is any reason to guess that it was assumed he had abandoned the camp. Why give any defence to a thief and asshole. I think thieves on the playa are far worse than ones in the regular world. If you steal f...

Re: 2018 Exodus / Traffic, stories
I read a newspaper story that burner trash dumping is a continuing problem. That the official dump stations sometimes get long lines and have high prices, and suddenly everybody thinks, "Oh nobody will notice if I drop my trash in that dumpster there" or even in private resident's trash cans. The st...

Re: 2018 Exodus / Traffic, stories
Yes, I understand those factors. Been in the line too many times. Of course, what people care about is the total time in stop-and-go/pulsed. While there can be slow going through Gerlach or Empire or other segments, my general experience is that it's always the "City to blacktop" time which you thin...

Re: OK so what the hell did I miss (the good old days)?
The camera tags in the early days were only for video cameras, which in those days tended to be bulky. Media registered at media mecca for tags (and they still register.) Still cameras didn't need to register, but still cameras in the 90s were a different story. Essentially all film. You thought abo...

Re: 2018 Exodus / Traffic, stories
Looking at those charts, I remain confused at how Exodus can vary as much as it does year to year. In fact, it is so surprising that I have to wonder if the data reported by BMIR that goes into these charts is that accurate. How can some years have long periods with waits up to 7 hours, and other ye...

Some Panoramas of 2018 playa
I have not made it out in a couple of years, so I have not made my usual giant panoramas. But with the help of Motorbike Matt I have built some panoramas from his webcam for the livestream. Not perfect, but the only way to see the whole city at once until other people get home with nicer ones. https...

Re: 2017 Exodus: Traffic, stories, etc.
I like the idea of a sleeping lot after gate. I would pay 5 or 10 bucks to have a pull-through space to park my trailer and sleep a while. OTOH it may create its own mini-Exodus. I was relieved to get to the rest area between Wadsworth and Reno on I80 to stop and nap my dangerously drowzy self at 3...

Re: 2017 Exodus: Traffic, stories, etc.
People have passed like that since the dawn of burning time, but no head-ons yet. Not that they could not happen. Whether people who leave early and pause to sleep are good or evil depends on where the bottleneck is, and if they selfishly create another bottleneck down the road when they merge. And ...

Re: 2017 Exodus: Traffic, stories, etc.
No, pulsing should not affect flow, or so Exodus has said, and it makes sense. Pulsing is just there so that instead of sitting in stop and go for the whole time, idling engines and burning fuel and kicking up dust, people stop and party for an hour. The main potential bottlenecks are the entrance t...

Re: 2017 Exodus: Traffic, stories, etc.
Better pulsing should not affect exodus times. The main thing that affects that is better handling of the chokepoints. I have been told that Exodus believes that Gerlach is the main chokepoint, and a little bit 34. Not the turn onto 34 which is what I thought it would be (and which could be improved...

Re: 2017 Exodus: Traffic, stories, etc.
wow 2017 Gate to Hwy 34 is almost always less than the 2016 times. Often half, and even 1/4 or less, than the 2016 times. And so far, for 16 of the Exodus hours, the 2017 time from Gate to Wadsworth is less than the 2016 time from Gate to Hwy 34 !!! Too bad we don't have exit numbers, to see where ...

Re: AMBER Alert abuse
It's not appropriate to say those who don't agree with city shutdown care nothing for the welfare of the children. They are simply asking why Black Rock City would have a vastly greater response to such issues compared to other cities of similar size. (It's actually an even harder comparison because...

Re: Vandals Strike 2016 Sound Camp Infrastructure
Of course there is a way -- which has been explicitly rejected by the BMOrg -- you can take this level of control over sales, which is to make all tickets tied to a person. In such a system, to buy a ticket you have to upload a jpeg of the person it will be for, and you need the ticket takers at the...

Re: Vandals Strike 2016 Sound Camp Infrastructure
Trademark law is not always intuitive. The basis of trademark law is to prevent confusion of the public. So if I use your trademark in a way that might make people think my product is your product, you can sue me. But what this means is that you are selling actual authentic BMOrg brand "burning man"...

Re: Seeking towing advice
A bit late, Strata -- I guess you were not towing the art car -- but there are web pages and videos that guide you on how to back up while towing. One of the systems is to put your hand on the bottom of your steering wheel and then turn in the direction you want the trailer to go. Or something like ...

Re: Using a deep cycle battery - inverters?
I wrote this article many years ago but it's still mostly correct, and people have found it useful: http://www.templetons.com/brad/burn/burn-power.html Since then, inverters have gotten cheaper and better. Even so, I have often come upon small TVs/computer monitors that use an external DC power supp...

Re: Vandals Strike 2016 Sound Camp Infrastructure
[ It's not possible to build a camp like White Ocean without early entry. Even if they could secure enough space after gate opening, they wouldn't be able to build the infrastructure needed to justify a five figure fee before their CUSTOMERS started arriving. Well, you say that, but on what do you ...

They don't need to know where they will be -- they bring the clients in from the airport or other means. I mean it is nice to know your address in advance, but not the end of the world. Re: Vandals Strike 2016 Sound Camp Infrastructure
I had presumed that once the gate is open, people can stake out space and nobody stops them. They don't let early arrivals stake out before gate open, but once it's open you can't tell an early arrival from a newly arrived.

You could deny placement -- not even saying I disagree -- but I suspect if you did, they would still be there, would have people who have early arrival stake out even larger camp space in non-theme territory the moment the gate opens, and defend it until the crews arrive. PNP customers probably don'...

The 10 principles aren't rules of course, other than LNT and the "no money" part of decommodification. They are principles that people noticed the community practicing on the playa and wrote down, mixed in with some principles particularly favoured by the organizers. At the same time, there is the 1...
