Re: 2017 Exodus: Traffic, stories, etc.

I like the idea of a sleeping lot after gate. I would pay 5 or 10 bucks to have a pull-through space to park my trailer and sleep a while. OTOH it may create its own mini-Exodus. I was relieved to get to the rest area between Wadsworth and Reno on I80 to stop and nap my dangerously drowzy self at 3...

Re: 2017 Exodus: Traffic, stories, etc.

People have passed like that since the dawn of burning time, but no head-ons yet. Not that they could not happen. Whether people who leave early and pause to sleep are good or evil depends on where the bottleneck is, and if they selfishly create another bottleneck down the road when they merge. And ...

Re: 2017 Exodus: Traffic, stories, etc.

No, pulsing should not affect flow, or so Exodus has said, and it makes sense. Pulsing is just there so that instead of sitting in stop and go for the whole time, idling engines and burning fuel and kicking up dust, people stop and party for an hour. The main potential bottlenecks are the entrance t...

Re: 2017 Exodus: Traffic, stories, etc.

Better pulsing should not affect exodus times. The main thing that affects that is better handling of the chokepoints. I have been told that Exodus believes that Gerlach is the main chokepoint, and a little bit 34. Not the turn onto 34 which is what I thought it would be (and which could be improved...

Re: 2017 Exodus: Traffic, stories, etc.

wow 2017 Gate to Hwy 34 is almost always less than the 2016 times. Often half, and even 1/4 or less, than the 2016 times. And so far, for 16 of the Exodus hours, the 2017 time from Gate to Wadsworth is less than the 2016 time from Gate to Hwy 34 !!! Too bad we don't have exit numbers, to see where ...

Re: AMBER Alert abuse

It's not appropriate to say those who don't agree with city shutdown care nothing for the welfare of the children. They are simply asking why Black Rock City would have a vastly greater response to such issues compared to other cities of similar size. (It's actually an even harder comparison because...

Re: Vandals Strike 2016 Sound Camp Infrastructure

Of course there is a way -- which has been explicitly rejected by the BMOrg -- you can take this level of control over sales, which is to make all tickets tied to a person. In such a system, to buy a ticket you have to upload a jpeg of the person it will be for, and you need the ticket takers at the...

Re: Vandals Strike 2016 Sound Camp Infrastructure

Trademark law is not always intuitive. The basis of trademark law is to prevent confusion of the public. So if I use your trademark in a way that might make people think my product is your product, you can sue me. But what this means is that you are selling actual authentic BMOrg brand "burning...

Re: Seeking towing advice

A bit late, Strata -- I guess you were not towing the art car -- but there are web pages and videos that guide you on how to back up while towing. One of the systems is to put your hand on the bottom of your steering wheel and then turn in the direction you want the trailer to go. Or something like ...

I wrote this article many years ago but it's still mostly correct, and people have found it useful: http://www.templetons.com/brad/burn/burn-power.html Since then, inverters have gotten cheaper and better. Even so, I have often come upon small TVs/computer monitors that use an external DC power supp...

Re: Vandals Strike 2016 Sound Camp Infrastructure

[ It's not possible to build a camp like White Ocean without early entry. Even if they could secure enough space after gate opening, they wouldn't be able to build the infrastructure needed to justify a five figure fee before their CUSTOMERS started arriving. Well, you say that, but on what do you ...

They don't need to know where they will be -- they bring the clients in from the airport or other means. I mean it is nice to know your address in advance, but not the end of the world. If you're willing to be out there in the back streets, past 3 or 9, there is space. Look at this photo from a Tues...

Re: Vandals Strike 2016 Sound Camp Infrastructure

I had presumed that once the gate is open, people can stake out space and nobody stops them. They don't let early arrivals stake out before gate open, but once it's open you can't tell an early arrival from a newly arrived.

Re: Vandals Strike 2016 Sound Camp Infrastructure

You could deny placement -- not even saying I disagree -- but I suspect if you did, they would still be there, would have people who have early arrival stake out even larger camp space in non-theme territory the moment the gate opens, and defend it until the crews arrive. PNP customers probably don'...

Re: Vandals Strike 2016 Sound Camp Infrastructure

The 10 principles aren't rules of course, other than LNT and the "no money" part of decommodification. They are principles that people noticed the community practicing on the playa and wrote down, mixed in with some principles particularly favoured by the organizers. At the same time, ther...

Re: Vandals Strike 2016 Sound Camp Infrastructure

A pretty disturbing amount of bigotry in this thread, I have to say. Radical inclusion means you don't demand people be like you, you don't insist there is only one way to experience the city, you don't lump everybody into one basket. If a camp is leaving too much moop, it should get talked to, and ...

Re: 2016 Exodus: Traffic, stories, etc.

Looks like above average RV density. Probable explanation: If you are in an RV, you can strike everything in camp, pack it up, go out and party, then sleep in your RV. At 6am, get up, do the final moop check in the light and drive off. Have breakfast during exodus, you have a kitchen. You can even d...

Re: Vandals Strike 2016 Sound Camp Infrastructure

There are many reasons people come to the playa. I would say the biggest three are: ⋅ Art -- to create and appreciate it ⋅ Partying/EDM (not discounting the art in these camps) ⋅ Community and socializing (There are of course many more and I am curious of other suggesti...

Ah, well you spoke of it with such certainty that I presumed you had read it in the permit and thus would know where the text was. Are you sure but have forgotten where? Or it in one of the operation plans? The permit does talk about minors, but only with respect to having a way to keep them away fr...

Re: AMBER Alert abuse

On the playa rangers and BM staff are required to report suspicion of certain events, including a missing minor. The permit spells out who is a mandatory reporter for what reported issues. Once that process starts, things happen that are spelled out in the permit. Like closing the gate. There is no...

Hmm. It's been many years, but I have driven 447 N from Gerlach in an RV and can't say I recall it being a particularly challenging road. I mean, it's not mostly straight like 447 south or anything, it has two windy passes, but hardly anything drivers from the west are unused to.

Oh, I know how the pulse works, been through it many a time, and I believe you're saying the same thing I am -- they have markers to measure the length of the line, and while strictly those measure it in distance, they know the translation from distance to number of vehicles, and they have a rate th...

Re: 2016 Exodus: Traffic, stories, etc.

That does not make sense to me. Since they don't know (unless they are asking or tracking licence plates) how long people who are leaving had to wait, I do agree that the time is likely what the length of the line was at any given time. If the line is 2,400 cars long and they are releasing 1,200 car...

Re: 2016 Exodus: Traffic, stories, etc.

The slope is too steep. It suggests Tuesday at 3am there was a 3 hour wait, but at 4am there was a 1 hour wait. So if you left at 4 you got out an hour before the people who left at 3. But on a more serious note, it should not be able to clear that quickly, unless what I have been told -- tha...

I don't think anybody knows just how many people were trying for the same pair more than once. Clearly it happened a great deal, massively, in 2012. As such, I fear the burden of proof is on those who want to assert that it has gone away (or reduced to some fraction of its value then.) If you look i...

Re: Dutch Auctions are the answer for how tickets should wor

One can conclude maximum demand for tickets at roughly $420 is no more than 150,000+20,000+1,000. (Individual sale did not quite get 2 tickets per winner, and a share of vehicle pass price should be included.) However, the number of 171,000 is probably a fair bit less than the maximum. That is becau...

Yeah, we all know how the auction works, but start your Dutch auction at just about any price and the event will still sell out waaaaaaayyyy before you get close to a 390.00 figure. Start at 2,000.00 a ticket and I guarantee it will still sell out in an afternoon at the 2,000.00 level. If it did no...
