Re: Hola from Seattle!! Virgin Burner (hopefully)

If you buy an old motorhome, the most important things are: transmission, tires, radiator and make sure the fridge works.
A portable Honda generator will use less fuel than the built-in one it has. The cost of fuel isn’t an issue, it’s that you have to carry all of it with you.

Re: 55 gallon drums and water storage

I’m all about the machinery too, but for this I’d rather be out by the tanks and hoses making sure everything is OK. You also don’t want to leave the fill hose in your RV, you’ll want to remove it and put the cap on your water tank. So you gotta go out there. All you need is a screw-on in-line garde...

Re: 55 gallon drums and water storage

I have been doing exactly this water arrangement for years... almost 20 of ‘em. It works great. I carry extra water on the trailer in food-grade barrels and I bring empty ones for my gray water, also on the trailer, so I’ve got about 100 gallons for myself and the First Mate, mostly for the shower. ...

Re: Hola from Seattle!! Virgin Burner (hopefully)

The Portland regional, SOAK, is pretty good and not too far to hit from here. I’d warn against falling into the recently-common “I’m going to Burning Man so I NEED to join a camp” mentality. The survival guide is essential and unless the camp is made of people who are already your real friends, you’...

Re: Biggest MOOP in the history of Burning Man

My MV isn’t open at all times 24/7. Almost no one’s is. You can’t just come up demanding entrance while I’m trying to work on it or whatever reason I have at the moment. The 747 guys are planning to upgrade the entrance/exit, because demand exceeded their expectations. Wtf kind of studies and regula...

Re: Biggest MOOP in the history of Burning Man

Lines to get in are a very accurate measure of popularity.

All this anti-burner-project propaganda coming from burners is amusing. It’s pretty much “performance art” in itself. It’s like the “Save the Man” and “BRC Underground Railroad” stuff.

Re: I made a Lag Bolt Hand Crank Tool!

If your impact runs out of oomph driving lags into playa you’ve got a very weak impact, probably a 1/4” drive thingy. If you want to crank them in by hand (???) Ratty is right, that’s called a speed wrench and they have existed for eons. You don’t have to fab your own if you haven’t got a welder or ...

Re: Biggest MOOP in the history of Burning Man

You’re all proving my point. You’re arguing over whether it’s art or not, and what else to do to expand on it, etc.
One of the biggest complaints about it was the lines to get in it.
I’d say a damn lot of people thought it was cool, not many others had that problem.

Re: Biggest MOOP in the history of Burning Man

Of course, YOU’D have pulled all this off without the slightest glitch. You would have known about the unforeseen property line issue, and you’d have accurately predicted the hardness of the playa along the entire route. You wouldn’t have done what these guys did, which apparently was go home and le...

Re: Greeter Bypass For Early Entry

That environmental argument does nothing but make people using it lose all credibility. You can’t hang a number like that on something that has nothing but variables. “A tank of gas” isn’t a consistent number. Different engines produce different amounts of emissions. And there’s such a thing as shut...

Re: Biggest MOOP in the history of Burning Man

Well that’s funny I know the guys who built the plane weren’t paid employees... but I’m talking about the plane itself not the camp. So, no one has ever gotten bogged in soft playa before? It’s happened to DPW, other private people, even cops. That’s just an excuse to call it “moop” when in fact it ...

Re: Biggest MOOP in the history of Burning Man

That sounds like a clever statement but it doesn’t hold water. The plane was built by real burners, not getting paid, working hard and doing fine craftsmanship. Finer than most of you are capable of. You guys have no idea how much metal fab happened to make it work. It’s not like some rich guy waved...

Re: Biggest MOOP in the history of Burning Man

These guys put in huge, never-give-up effort on their idea of what they wanted to to with their time and money. A whole lot of people and camps shell out large sums of money and effort doing what they do. Relative to my own personal budget, I shell out a ridiculous amount on my burning man stuff. Th...

How to survive Burning Man without too much trauma: Don’t do anything radically different than you usually do, particularly untested.
Don’t wear new different shoes, don’t get excessively trashed, and don’t consume anything that sounds that much like “toilet”.

To be fair, maybe it ended up as “mobile art” and not a “Mutant Vehicle”. Originally it was to be a Mutant Vehicle and was going to be licensed through the same channels as every other. I didn’t go this year when it finally had wheels and didn’t follow things that closely about it. If that’s how it ...

The Land Yacht is in the back yard, tires flat, doesn't run, interior mostly stripped out and what isn't is trashed... so, what the hell I'm not driving.

Yes in fact there have been some MVs involved in post-event issues. La Contessa is the one that first comes to mind. And a few have been involved in fatalities, which is a way bigger deal than everyone whining because tbe 747 guys hit some soft playa and are having a tough go at it. It’s far from th...

Re: Biggest MOOP in the history of Burning Man

I’ll throw a piece of meat to the haters: the 747 did get one piece of special treatment. It was powered by a fully visible and non-mutated tug truck.
You’re not supposed to be allowed to bring a non-self-powered MV and pull it around with a non-mutated truck.

The bar has dropped? You clearly have no clue about art cars in BRC. The bar used to be lower than whale shit on the ocean floor. The zero-effort junk that used to roll around is nothing like the big plane MV. Its easy to armchair-criticize the things people build and bring when you’ve built and bro...
