Re: I'm so old I remember when...

I absolutely love the Tesla Model S dual-motor version, its insanely fast and does a ton of ultra-cool stuff... while it’s all new and still working. I kinda hate the Model 3 that’s entirely controlled by the touch screen, you have to navigate to the right menu and select a screen too icon just to o...

Re: I'm so old I remember when...

Chevy/GMC pickups through the ‘50s had a floor mounted starter button too.
I use one of those headlight dimmer floor buttons on my later model truck to control a function I didn’t want to tie my hands up with. I love those things. The goddamm dinners should still be done that way.

Re: I'm so old I remember when...

I remember when Canadian version of Ford pickup trucks were called Mercury. And Canadian Dodge trucks were “Fargo”! A lot of Canadian Pontiacs got Chevy engines. That seems normal now but back in the day, various GM brands may have used the same chassis and various pieces but they always had their ...

Re: Adult Trikes: Any recommendations?

Trikes unsafe in BRC? Man where you do get this crap? The percentage of people who wipe out on a bike is a lot higher than those who wipe out on a trike on the playa. I’ve never actually heard of anyone wiping out on a trike out there, but lots of bike crashes, often when they hit a soft patch of si...

Haha that’s funny... seriously, don’t worry about those “Perimeter” people. They’re just volunteer Rangers who get exiled to outside the event because they weren’t any good at actual Rangering. They’re mostly tech-job geeks with a laminated badge and a golf cart. All you have to do is hop the fence....

Re: Acoustic insulation for generators

The large scale industrial generators at Burning Man are always the MQ type (“Movie Quiet”, used on movie sets). The general favorite is the Honda EU super quiet series and the various equivalents. Generator boxes as you describe have been out there for decades. They don’t work very well. The standa...

These are instructions for How To Be A Spectator At Burning Man.
Ride the bus. Bring nothing. Join a camp like it’s a hotel. If everyone did this you’d have no reason to go at all.
Someone has to bring it all. “Do-ocracy” and all that shit.

You’re missing that it’s junk. They neglected to say on the box “This Is Junk”, so it’s usually too late when people find out. I’ve had friends buy those things. They’re always crap, the Costco really is the one you want. It shows up around spring, for some reason they consider it a summer item. Min...

The direct answer to how fast they sell out isn’t just “quickly”, it’s literally as fast as the servers can process the ticket orders.
It’s not something you have to get done pretty quick, it’s something you have to be on the very instant they go on sale.

Diet, like pretty much everything else, is all up to you and what you’re willing to do to provide for yourself. For a lot of people part of the fun is living decadently in the middle of nowhere and eating great food. Some folks get by on MREs and peanut butter. I think you have a better time if you ...

Trikes pretty much just work on the playa, I don’t think I’ve seen one that’s too crappy. The usual advice about bikes applies, if it’s a WalMart or other super-cheapie then pull it apart first to grease and adjust everything, don’t just run it as-is because they don’t take the time to do any of tha...

Oh yeah! In the old days, there was no fucking “perimeter”.
They actually yelled on bullhorns “Get as close as you like, we don’t care if you die!”

Sure, things are bigger and “better” now, but it’s just not what it was.

Well that’s not far off the mark. I was just going through old weapons trying to assess whether to sell or keep. One is a 1910-ish Colt Frontier revolver with papers reporting it was once owned by Pancho Villa. Not his personal weapon but one he gave a woman as a gift. Also some 1800s rifles with no...

I think the only piece of advice, from decades of experience with things like that, is don’t make babies with that person. You’re on the ocean with stormy weather my friend, don’t take on more cargo.

I go back to when the man was on the ground with hay bales to get him lit. There wasn’t really an overwhelming sense of camaraderie everywhere, there was also a good amount of fuck you. But it was good, self reliance was real then. That’s my biggest beef with The New Burners, they think it’s all abo...

That’s a typo. But there’s really a lot more to it. Super briefly: Harvey burning his now-iconic wooden stick figure wasn’t originally the “Burning Man” you know at all. The whole event out in the desert thing wasn’t his idea, it was the San Francisco Cacophony Society. They held what they called a ...

Re: Using EV (car) batteries to store power on playa

Your setup won’t be free because there are still expensive parts between the car and some solar panels and being able to run an air conditioner. I bring a 5000btu A/C as an emergency spare. I’ve tried it on playa, in a relatively small RV (truck camper) and it’s inadequate when it’s really hot. That...
