Re: A solution to suicides (at the man burns/ temple burns)
BB: have you been in close to a big burn? it is damn scary and disorienting. When you head says RUN AWAY, you do and won't be looking for holes in the fence. There is barely enough folks that can be reliably available for perimeter sober, or making the art ready for burning. Adding a fence to the ta...

Re: A solution to suicides (at the man burns/ temple burns)
so, this event has been going on for about 20 years, attendance 10,000 - 60,000, 15 bigger burns each year. let's use an average of 20,000 participants, and say half of them view the burns. 20yrs x 20,000 folks x 1/2viewing x 15 burns = approx 3000000 (3 million) folks watching burns, and 1 successf...

Re: Little girl's off-rail industrial hand car
Looks like a great project. and one that can fit in the back of a pickup. But methinks it needs to be longer.......longer wheelbase, less overhang. First person stepping on will possibly lift the other end off the ground. even though real rail handcars have about a 3 ft wheel spacing and are over 6 ...

northwest burners traveling hwy 31 by Summer Lake Hot Springs and Paisley
There is a pretty large brush and forest fire about a mile east of Summer Lake Hot Springs. It has stayed on the south side of the highway and crested the Fremont Ridge south of the hot springs. The town of Paisley is threatened. http://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/4967/ It reads like the highway is op...

Re: Anyone have feedback on a Kodiak 10x10 ft tent?
We have a 10 x10 Kodiak and have used it on playa, non event and no wind storms. couple comments: The ceiling height is in the middle and the sides slope inward (roof is about 6 x 6) so a queen bed in the middle wipes out standing room. The tent is held up by the 2 outer poles and a large part of wi...

biggest know a/c problem on the playa:
Black Rock Power Co-op feeding a city block.
3 trailer mounted generators somewhere around 225 kw total.
Hot afternoon in the Orgy Dome with 10 - 12 room/portable a/c units running.

if you bring water in jugs, 5 gallon bottles, or totes; pour grey water back into the empties. If you are using water to cook or rinse dishes, re-use it for washing, rinsing feet, etc. Then declare it waste and pour it back into the bottles and take them home for disposal.

another idea: come to the playa in July, set up your camp outside the exclusion zone and party for months. No ticket required. No vehicle pass required. You will still hear all the sounds from the 70 - 100 thousand watt audio systems

Re: Can I have a laser art project permitted by the org to be on playa?
The organizers of event have been somewhat blind to the federal requirements for use of lasers for many years. Only when a volunteer was blinded did the org really deal with the issue. I have personally been 'illuminated by high power lasers and it is not a good feeling. you cannot get you eyes clos...

Re: Unplanned volunteering, howto?
projects are always looking for perimeter crew before the burns. depending on fueling or other needs, perimeter may need to be established as early as noon. First day you get to the event, go to the Artery(closed 12 -1 ) and ask about volunteering. The perimeter volunteer list will likely be at the ...

Re: Looking to share RV (4 ladies)
As mentioned before and elsewhere, RV's drive like a big box truck; only far worse because they are often overloaded, particularly in the ass end, so they go down the road like a waddling duck. Gas mileage is about 8mpg. An RV that claims to sleep 6 - 8 only has room for 2-3 folks, plus all their ge...

put the alternator on a hole high in the air. when the wind blows, or the b.s. too deep. Oh and bypass (short out) the regulator. remove the diodes. spin fast enough you (2000 - 4000 rpm) and you get 100 - 140 volts AC (3phase)

Something else to consider is looking at the MOOP map from last year. The map is essentially the placement map from last year with colors added to show how clean they were. This should give some idea about where you may want to look for a spot.

comment on earlier post: sample calculation was not intended to imply the playa is sand; or soft. most places would be considered 'hard surface' so drawbar pull to move the vehicle is closer to weight/25.
