Thanks to those who came by
and said "Thanks for bringing art!" while I was working on an art piece on the playa. It was not a good burn this year and those kind souls who came by and said thanks really helped!

Now these earplugs WORK!
We have used these wonderful earplugs at BM and they block out a very high percentage of the noise: http://www.earplugsonline.com/
They don't go into your ears, they cover the opening of the ear fully and are rated at 34db which is a major amount of attenuation. These earplugs are comfy, too!

That sucks that you got attacked. Unfortunately, there are nasty people at Burning Man. It was good that you walked away. As far as the coffee folks go, they are known for heaping abuse on the customers, it's part of their charm and often cracks me up. Don't take them seriously, it's an act. Same go...

Marine batteries are not a great idea as they are 'wet' and can leak or spill. It's better to use AGM batteries which are 'solid' and don't come with the spill risk. It is always better to use batteries rated for PV systems and marine batteries aren't really good for this application. Here is a URL ...

Walkin camping can be very quiet but as others have said, it is exposed to the wind. We often camp just across from walkin camping in a minvan. The minivan takes care of the wind issue. You might be able to find a friendly large vehicle or RV owner that will let you camp in the 'wind shade' of the r...

Nice LED pants, Phil! As far as washing clothing that has EL wire attached to it, you CAN wash it with the EL wire still attached as Dork points out. Your best bet is to soak the pants in a large tub with water and detergent. You'll have to soak them again in a tub filled with clean water (several t...

I won't miss the Bush/Oil/War protest art!
One thing that has really turned me off on Burning Man these past several years has been the all the Bush/Oil/War protest art. I go to Burning Man to get away from all that stuff. I also live in a very political area (the Bay Area) and get really sick of the constant whining. It's so great that Obam...

You may find more comfort on a recumbent trike and thus not need the motor. Go to www.atomiczombie.com for ideas. There are plenty of pre-made trikes out there. The standard ones will be a lot less expensive than recumbents which are sadly a bit rare in this country. I'm in the process of building a...

Camper Van Rentals?
My partner and I have been doing the 'sleep in the back of a min-van' thing at BM for several years now. We'd like to rent and possibly buy a small camper van for BM and other travel uses. The reason for wanting something bigger is that we need the space and comfort. It is kind of hard to work on we...

What I've learned from all of this
We've never had a problem with LEOs on the playa. Reading the posts on here tells me that how we act at Burning Man has a lot to do with avoiding LEO problems. 1. We don't hang around the large art/party cars or the rave/dance tents. This seems to be where MOST of the LEO action happens 2. We don't ...

Maybe some of us hard working art types are too busy doing/seeing art at BM to be bothered with costumes! When you are working on a project non-stop, costumes are the LAST thing you think about. Interesting essay on the theme
However, I'll just do what most people at Burning Man do every year: IGNORE THE THEME! The Green Man was really the only theme that sparked any interest on my part. The BORG doesn't care abou the theme much either since funded art (and all other art) is not required to have anything to do with the t...

Burning down someone else's art and endangering people's lives in the process has nothing to do with radical expression. It has everything to do with stupid, reckless, self-centered behavior. 1. Earplugs! 2.Sleep in a minvan, these things have amazing sound insulation! RVs have NO insulation, same goes for tents :) You can even cover up the minivan for more light and sound protection. A couple of things to consider
1. Playa dust is VERY hard on electronics. Your speakers might be okay, but if you don't seal up your electronics properly, they'll be damaged. 2. Large scale sound installations are restricted to certain areas of the playa. Check out the sound regulations at BM before brining your setup to the play...
