The dust problem - worse than you think
My aunt lives in Reno and she tells me that the dust there is out of control. If they have to close the casinos in Reno, the BLM will not allow the even to open Sunday night.

finding a place to camp
There is lots of room. Except for the theme camps, which are only about 15% of BRC, you can camp anywhere that is open. Everybody has their vehicles in their camps - usually around the edges to serve as wind breaks. To find your spot, it might be best to park you vehicles in some place on the outski...

dust on your glasses
IF I am going to see much, I have to wear glasses. It's not bad when you get used to it. and after a while you forget you have them on. But there are problems with dust. I remember going into Patty Mirage a few years ago, when they had built an enclosed pub in the form of an ancient tomb. I came in ...

buying hootch in Alturas and gifting to bars
Thanks for the tip on Alturas - four corners market. Alcohol is definately less expensive in California compared to Oregon, Washington and BC. If you are coming south from Oregon on 395, the turn to the east (toward BRC) is about 2 miles before you get to Alturas. Note that you will have to go throu...

is gas available in Cedarville this year (2008)?
The gas station in Cedarville has changed hands a few times in the past few years. Are they open this year and pumping gas? Last year they had plenty of gas and served up good food in the back for Burners passing through.

Looking for LED flashlights
I am looking for a source of inexpensive LED flashlights. What I have in mind are hand-held, small flashlights similar to the expensive, key chain ones sold in camping stores.

New theme?
This American Dream theme just isn't working. Judging by this thread, it just stimulates arguments and we don't need Burning Man for that. It would be OK with me if we did not have a theme, but if we need one how about one of these? three rabits and a horny rooster show me something huh? great gallo...

skinny kitty
We had a number of good experiences at Skinny Kitty at the 4:30 plaza. We were also camped in the neighborhood, and from my experience they were good neighbors. It was great to get high quality hot tea late at night. Also, their camp earned major style points. That is a big camp, and it does not see...

No one in our camp could use the guide effectively - we gave up and had a great time just wandering around. Reminded me of my first burn in 02 when I didn´t know there was a guide. I had a great time then and also this year. Having said that, the crappy format of the guide was a diservice to those ...

An early burn of the man
As I understand it, the early burn of the man was a symbolic act - a protest against the more structured, planned, less spontaneous nature of the current event. If that is the case, I must say that this protest was not very creative. Burning someone elses art early is the best that this guy could do...

RV shade and wind break
We have used the RV as a wind break for the tents in our camp. Although the wind will come from every direction, the most common is from the south and south west. Park your RV with the door on the lee side. RVs heat up in the sun, and you are going to be in full sun. If you could put Aluminent or an...

when to arrive and when to leave
Any time from Monday morning on during the week is a good time to arrive. A good time to leave is when you have had enough. My advice is to lighten up. Read the survival guide and show up. It may sound strange, but don't even try to "maximize" the experience - just let it happen. With an RV you have...

I have taken an old Nikon Coolpix (only 2 mega pixels) for the last five years with good results. The playa dust is going to get on the camera, but you can reduce the amount of dust by keeping the camera in some kind of bag when not shooting. I have had good exeriences with the stock zip up bag made...

You can certainly get whatever you want in Reno - they know we are coming and there will be plenty of available gear. cheap fabric
You might want to consider old sheets, table cloths and the like from the rejects from thrift stores (such as Goodwill). They sell the lower grade stuff by weight. It might take a little effort to find out who sells the culls at your local store or collection center. Often they bail the stuff up and...

staking down shade structures
I know that rebar is popular, but it is far from ideal. The sharp edges on the top of the are a hazzard (it seems like somebody in our camp gets cut every year), long stakes can be difficult to remove, and unless you are careful, you will probably get soft steel rebar which is not very strong. Screw...

organizing your own event
The overall organizing strategy for our arts festival is "open source". We all know how to do it, and many of us have organized our own smaller scale events. If the Burningman trade mark was moved to public domain it would be a major loss to the organization that puts on the festival. My first year at Burning Man I went to CT to cheer for the women participants from my camp. I gawked, I cheered, I loved it. And by the smiles on the women, and their jokes, it looked to me like they were having a pretty good time. In our second year, my wife and I happened to be where the CT ride p...

Getting to Burning Man early
For newbe's - If you arrive on the first day of the festival, which will be Monday Aug 27 this year, you will be arriving early. Watching the burn
My advice for watching the burn is to back off and watch from a distance. If you get up close you are likely to be packed in like a sardine with lot's of people shouting at each other to sit down or not to sit down or other hassles. You will be able to see just fine at the back of the crowd where th...

aluninent and dust
We had a 20x20 piece of aluminent (70% block) up for 6 days last year. We did not have problems with dust accumulting and then droping when the wind came up. The way it looked to me, the dust slipped through the aluminent rather than accumulating. It will not keep the dust off, but your camp will be...

Aluminet
We had a good experience with aluminent last year. That stuff is strong, not a moop generator, and way cooler (lower in temperature) than dark shade cloth. We used 70% aluminent and the sun protection was adequate. Not dark shade like 90% shade cloth, but 10 degrees cooler. It is lighter than blue o...
