Re: The Bar 2017 Edition
I have a petty gripe. I flew in pre-event 2017 Friday to help with setup. Flew out Sunday. I drove back in on Wednesday of the event. The G&P guy made me cut all of the pre-event and flight bracelets. I handed them over to him, and he said I could keep them. I am guessing he just fucked with me, or ...

I'd love to meet a Hollywood screenwriter for my Idea: a Messiah returning who will tell the truth (about climate-change, the Kennedy assassinations, 9-11, peak oil, etc.), 12, well-known disciples (an all-star cast) to back up "the truth", a new rational religion based on the uniqueness of this pl...

Re: Lag screws vs everything else...
Agreed on the mesh vs. tarp, but not my call initially, so we are stuck with a heavy duty, grommet-reinforced, 20 x 30 sail. As a side note, on Anubis, we found that if you twist the 10k lb. ratchet straps into something more resembling a rope than a strap, looking at it from 15' away, it will move ...

Good to know on the lags, Fig. Elgaz: No, the triple anchoring is reversed. The single guy wire comes down from the grommet to a triple anchoring, like a chicken leg and foot, using a figure eight or some other impressive display of nautical knotting skill. Earlier in this thread, the Zip line folks...

EBB&Glow camp has a 18' high twin tower set up (two 4x8 home depot type industrial storage racks, heavy iron) and a main 20' x 30' HD tarp that drapes over the whole thing. It sounds like few well-placed, three to an anchor point, three points along each 20' (each corner and 1 in the middle) and 2 a...

Well, I can't come up with a design that I like. The TJ mechanism is super bulky if it is to carry any real weight / force. The proportions are all off. That's all folks.

So yeah, god bless the small art and the people who bring it. And the small, spontaneous acts. God bless the AMATEURS, mostly. The people who create in their spare time with spare money. You sound like you would be surprised at how much of the big stuff is exactly that. They are just bolted togethe...

I also think that providing or facilitating access to liability insurance for art cars, projects and camps is definitely worth consideration in the context of large amounts of directed, donated funds within the BM community. The larger problem here is how to underwrite and assess the risks without ...

I just figured out the walking ratios and how to crowd move this. It is sort of Ben Hur ramming speed meets the Flinstones. Fuck! I'm stoked! I am sure DiVinci would shit all over my idea. PERFECT!

Yoy need to design for wind - https://www.washoecounty.us/building/ConstructionDesign%20Requirements.php. Trojan Horse, Anubis and the Alien Siege Machine were all designed for at least 125 MPH winds, which is important for the playa, but also for transportation. With good pre-event planning (make c...

I've hauled a few things out there. If you are using a "normal" flatbed pulled by a tractor trailer, you are restricted to <8' wide by <8.5' tall. If you can find a low boy (hard) you can add two feet to that on the top. Keep in mind, 8' wide is the width ratchet to ratchet. Last project I did had p...

I have exactly the project you need. Nothing but hardship, regret and blisters. You will gladly redeem the last two for the former. Burning Man started as a bonfire. It has turned into a forge. Mouth sparking, fire farting. Theo Jansen quadrped, pulled by participants. Possible upper platform. Dangerous. Hard to turn. Possible steam engine powered. Use bacon grease to fuel boiler. Bacon cooking, grease powered, walking, talking Honey Badger. It doesn't give a shit.

I sort of struggled with this on my first build, but someone remarked that it was overall less "impact" for a number of good reasons: ·Less driving overall for most of the 70k folks out there. A lot less. If one considers that a huge chunk of the population comes out of the Bay Area, and that none o...
