I just insured the vehicle like any other. AAA didn't ask about any modifications on the vehicle, just the usual stuff like airbags, etc. So, I didn't tell them. I added it onto my policy and can take it off at any time. They told me that they'll pay me back the pro-rated amount at that time. Of cou...

Money saving Ins/Outs

Our camp this year is thinking of ways to save money. Last year our truck rental was atrocious. But, after the burn, we were able to secure a place to store our heaviest gear in Reno. This gives us the chance to save some major dough on the rentals. Instead of a week-long rental, we can rent a truck...

Thanks for the replies, gentleman. I understand that I have a time limit. I'm a little late in getting started this year. So, it's time to think about feasibility of these flames. I should be able to knock together things in a weekend, but I'm not sure if I have enough weekend to spare. Thanks for t...

Fire safety on Mutant Vehicles

I don't know if this topic is addressed somewhere else. I tried to search for it, but couldn't find the right information. I am considering putting some flame effects on my art car this year. Nothing too fancy, just a bottle of propane driving some 200 small jets of flame each about the size of the ...

Let's take a look at what I said, and my attitude. First, I expressed that I do not plan on driving intoxicated. But, in that same post, I made a flippant remark about campmates driving "sloshed." And I mentioned a safety measure that so far no one else has. (Speed kills!) In my next post I apologiz...

Save that for those you don't like. Dr. Pyro: "First, I happen to know BBSue and I can most assuredly promise yo...

You mean I can sue an event just because I learn statistics?? They must be safely guarded then. Paranoia doesn't begin to describe all of this talk. I'll admit, I'm new to Burning Man and all of it's lore. What has happened to makke everyone fear law action? Are people getting sued left and right? I...

Ron says: "Based on what you wrote I'd guess you're not preparing for the worse case. Limiting the top speed of the rig is not preparing for the worse case. It is attempting to limit the damage. Preparing for the worse case would involve getting a lot of insurance coverage to protect your assets whe...

"BF, rather than whine about how we are all beating you up, maybe you should actually digest some of the great advice you have received on minimizing the risk of your camp mates actually driving inebriated. Token, back off, man. I'm not advocating drunken driving what so ever. I personally will not drive drunk. I know that it's dangerous. I know that it could hurt people, damage art, etc. In fact, I'll do as much as I can to prevent people from driving drunk. But, I've seen it plenty on the playa. I kn...

I always got the impression that if the car is driving slowly and in a safe manner, they would let things slide a bit. Of course, I don't plan on driving my car drunk this year (new art car). But, I'm sure that one of my camp mates will take it for a spin while sloshed. I'm going to rig the throttle...

capjbadger,

Don't worry the rest of our LED's (2000 of 'em) and our EL wire will run off a generator, along with our sound system, drink mixing apparatus, and our occassional firing up of the 3000W Jacob's Ladder.

Geekster, I am curious about the overdrive pulley solution. Will I be able to leave the overdrive pulley on my art car for the drive up to BRC? I might be able to change the pulley when I arrive, if I have to. But, I want to avoid as much car work on the playa as possible. I found a guy locally that...

Thanks for all of the tips! This is exactly the type of info I was looking for. Right now, our truck has a brand new radiator. The old one was corroded so badly, I could stick my finger through the fins and they would come apart like the dust on butterfly wings. I think we're going to have to upgrad...

Art Car Engine Cooling

Here is a question for all of the art car builders/drivers. Do you take extra precautions for the extreme heat of the playa for your engine? Idling around in 105*F is probably the hardest possible treatment of your engine. I have an old F250 with a 351M as the base for our art car. Should we put som...

Using a smaller engine would definitely save on gas. But, we're going to be driving the art car up there under it's own power, and putting together the peices when we arrive. And swapping engines on the playa just doesn't seem like a wise choice. I'll take a look at the effects of high altitude on m...

What do you mean by this? Doesn't every art car creep along just like we're planning on doing?

I can believe that we'll need more than our tank can hold. That was my gut instinct. I'm just curious how much more... I guess we'll need to bring a few extra gallons for our generator anyway. We can always pour the gas back into our tank for the drive home. In this case it's not a big problem to ov...

How much gasoline to bring?

This is our camp's first year bringing a Mutant Vehicle. It's based on a '78 F250. The engine is a 351M (a V8). We don't plan on going faster than idle at all (even to the point of putting in a wood block to prevent using the accelerator). But idling the car around frequently, day and night. How muc...
