That looks pretty awesome. Where did you source that Spandex fabric? And if you don't mind, how cheap is cheap?

Re: Spirit Airlines Warning
I needed to go the restroom, so when they turned off the seat-belt light I called the attendant over to ask how much that was going to cost me. You joke, but IIRC Ryan Air actually tried to do that a few years ago. The backlash was harsh and immediate, and they ended up backpedaling, but the way ai...

Re: Seeking towing advice
My understanding is that truck tires are usually radial tires, because when you are accelerating or braking, the forces acting upon the tire are in the direction of the movement, and radial tires are better at that. Trailer tires are usually bias tires, which are not as good with forces in the direc...

Re: Vehicle Pass Required for Trailer carrying MV?
Interesting. Maybe I should have said: "They're supposed to".
But I have met several people who had their vehicles get put in D-lot by gate because they didn't have the letter. I have no idea what percentage they check though.

You probably know this, but just in case: Gate will want to see the DMV invite letter if you are trailering an MV in. Make sure you have it accessible at the gate.

Re: Flame effects for mutant bicycle (approval/licensing)
Shoeshine, you do *not* need to get in line with the MVs. If there is any confusion, make sure you tell them that your vehicle is human powered and you are only there for the flame inspection. Ask for a place called 'Salem's Lot'. That's where FAST does the flame inspection. Note that technically yo...

Re: RGBs and 12 Volt Batteries
This is of course impossible to answer since you don't provide any details about the leds or the batteries. But here is some math to get you started. Let's assume your strip has 60 leds per meter and each led draws 200mW. That gives you about 1A per meter. You have 33 meters, so that's 33A. If you h...

Re: Costco carport or pop up?
Costco carports are definitely playa proven, I'd highly recommend it over the ez ups. A work of warning for anchoring the carport. Neighbors of ours had theirs insufficiently secured, and in a storm the carport broke free. It flew thru the air high enough to clear another car port, then started roll...

Yes, I was not using that corded impact wrench. We don't have a generator, otherwise I would have gone for that one. I used the 18 Volt 1/4 in. Cordless Variable Speed Hex Impact Driver ( Item Nr 68853 ). It did OK with 3/8" lag screws, but struggled with the 1/2". What's worse, with one charge it w...

Any recommendations on 3/8" vs 1/2" dia? The latter should have much higher pullout strength, but how hard is it to screw into the playa? Anyone tried 18"? When I ordered them last year I got 3/8" 14" (that was the longest they had in 3/8") and, because I was concerned about them being strong enoug...

There is a container service run by the borg. That's what most people use. The containers are stored on the Ranch, I believe. You can't access them outside of BM though. I'm not sure what the exact status of the program is. There may be a waiting list. If you go with someone else, then as Gaminwench...

A few years ago someone in the AEZ had built a hexayurt that used six inch velcro strips instead of tape. I liked the idea, though I remember checking afterwards and the six inch velcro was hard to find and quite pricey.

Melodiousdirge, the locks you referred to are quite common in Germany, and probably elsewhere in Europe. They are commonly known as 'Speichenschloss', which translates to 'Spoke-Lock'. There is a simple variant which just slides sideways into the spokes (http://s28.photobucket.com/user/182grad/media...

We had 14" 3/8" diameter and 18" 1/2" diameter. The 1/2" seemed to go in *significantly* slower and harder than the 3/8. So going to 5/8 I wouldn't be surprised at all if those were a bitch to put in.melodiousdirge wrote:I guess going to a much larger diameter had significantly more of an effect than I thought.

Also, are 10ft lengths long enough, or would longer be better. We are test setting it up this weekend, haven't taken it out of the box yet. Longer is better. No, unless someone wrote a app specifically for BM tickets that checked the voided ticket list, then no, a normal QR scanner app wouldn't know that it's a burning man ticket and wouldn't check the voided ticket list. That said, gate will probably scan the code, and they obviously would check if the ...

Re: Running a figjam swamp cooler off 12V D battery pack
My pump draws 500mA and the fan draws 1.6 A, wired per figjam's instructions (parallel?) for a total of 2.1A (?) That's correct. The 8-pack of D alkaline batteries totals 12V (?) Correct. Eveready's D batteries are rated at about 10,000mAh at a draw of 500mA (http://data.energizer.com/PDFs/E95.pdf)...

the VP programme *has* to push the community to bring less vehicles, that's the whole point. Yes, but there are two knobs they can turn to achieve that. You can run one cable, and then hook several of these strands up to the same cable, as long as they are wired in parallel. The cable just needs to be thick enough for the load.
