Re: cooling your tent or van
Figjam, you are a genius! Thank you for noticing my original posting of the gargage can swamp cooler(invented by my friend Amber) and for improving and unleashing the concept onto the imaginations of other innovators. I will make a huge effort to meet you in 2012. Please allow me to treat you to a c...

What Phil said. I have a non-Costco type, maybe different sized tubing than yours, but I end up using both 4 inch and 6 inch. Experiment before you commit. you want the tarp tight to shed wind, but with enough give in the bungees to not rip out the grommets. Having two sizes allows me to make it jus...

if we show up late, is there still space available? Yes. Most likely towards the outer rings. Which tend to be somewhat (relatively) quieter, anyway. Or, you could always attend the nearest Regional event, make friends, and some of them may save you a space in their camp and be there to welcome you...

What if they arrived in the middle of a huge dust storm? Good point, except that this can happen at any time. 2008 saw a long line of people leaving on the first Monday due these very conditions. They were planning on staying the whole week, and left the first day. I wouldn't recommend planning, or...

Sigh. I really hate to confuse the issue, since you seem to have come to a decision that your children are more important than Burning Man. I couldn't agree more with you about THAT. But...even if you were only at Burning Man for 24 hours, you would know if you 1) never want to go again(it happens) ...

This is one of the most thought -provoking threads yet (intentionally or not). re. DIY vs paying for a package: is it the same to spend $2000 on a Carnival cruise vs $2000 on a Crossroads Bike Tour of China? No. One requires dedication, preparation, training and effort. It's about the journey, not t...

Safest way would be to freeze water in milk jugs for your cooler ice. That way, no chance of contamination from cooler items. And, you have cold water to drink as it melts, as well as safe swamp cooler water. Last year we used alum (it clumps particulates and they fall to the bottom)(just about a te...

I posted that trash can swamp cooler on Instructables http://www.instructables.com/id/Portable-Evaporative-Cooler-swamp-cool er/ and I love your idea, Figjam. IMHO, people who say evap ponds work great were never the last ones in camp who had to break it down. Sweat, dead skin, used toothpaste, spit, ass funk, etc. sitting in warm water (plus copious playa dust) for a week = a mess you do not want to deal with. Suggestion: get some used 5 gal buckets with...

thanks to Robbie Dobbs for giving it a name. Sophomore Megalomania.
