Re: Nifty Multiple-Use Piece o' Luggage
It's called the Bench Water Caddy. It's made of food-safe plastic and includes a 25-gallon water tank, bracketing a central storage compartment (20" long x 11.5" wide x 4" deep) and topped by a padded, sturdy lid which can be used as both step and bench. The lid comes in three colours, grey, hunter...

what i meant by "working well" was this: there is a lot of sun beating down on the playa, hence an abundance of fuel for a solar oven. there's only so much grilled/stove-cooked food i can stand in a week at home, so i figured if i brought a solar oven i could whip up one of the casseroles for which ...

cooking on the playa
does anyone have any experience using a solar oven on the playa? it seems as thought it would work pretty well (being in the middle of the desert & all), and the components (cardboard boxes & aluminum foil) could be burned/recycled after they're done being used.

it won't stay sealed. as dry ice sublimates, the volume increases by about a factor of 800 or so. to put that in perspective, a 5 lb block that's a little under a half a square foot and one inch thick will expand to the size of a decent suv. when it does that, any container it's in will either have...

newbie with logistical plastic question...
everyone says ziploc (r) bags, but what about tupperware (r) or rubbermaid (r) containers? they're nearly air-& water-tight, able to withstand high temperatures, reusable, won't split at the seams or leak, and you know when they're closed, as opposed to plastic bags which can sometimes be deceiving....

evaporative refrigerators
does anyone have any experience with evaporative refrigerators? from what i understand, it's 2 earthenware pots, one that fits inside the other, and the space between them is filled with wet sand. they're used by humanitarian groups in desert places with no electricity (i.e. africa) and a friend who...

how does the solar shower thing work?
solar showers have been mentioned in this thread a few times, but i'm baffled...how, exactly, does one shower on the playa? what does a solar shower look like? how does it work? what do you do with the grey water (i've seen a set-up for a water-evaporation system, but it looked quite complicated & n...
