Do dead bugs count as MOOP?

So it seems like this year there are going to be a lot of bugs on the playa. Do I have a responsibility to pick up and carry out any dead bugs that I find? Or will Restoration be ok with us leaving them to decompose on their own?

Re: What do you wish you knew before your first time? 2015

Nothing before my first time--that was picture-perfect. Before my _third_ time, I wish I'd known this vital, essential, truly necessary fact: If you did something foolish like damaging your leg jumping off an art installation as part of your "super Thunderdome warrior training session" (as a purely ...

Re: Shipping container from SF/Oakland and back?

Thanks for the guidance. I hadn't thought about the permitting issues, but now that you've mentioned it, I appreciate the need to make sure that the vendor is properly credentialed through Outside Services. I apologize if my request for information was not in keeping with the spirit of ePlaya. It se...

Re: Shipping container from SF/Oakland and back?

Though some camps may have had shipping containers hauled in from home. However, I think they may have been referring to this service . I saw that too, and we are considering it, although it's not clear from the website whether or not the service is still available at this point. I know that in at ...

Shipping container from SF/Oakland and back?

Last year, I talked to a couple different camps about how they got all their gear out there, and several of them had paid to have a giant shipping container trucked out there and dropped at their placement, then picked up at the end of the event and driven back. It sounded like a great way to bring ...

Re: How to build an EMT conduit sphere?

So, a bit of planning and scheming later, I've decided to make a relatively small sphere, diameter 10 feet. Among other reasons, I'm planning to initially stage this piece in an art gallery, and that's about all the space that I have to work with. The challenge is that I want people to be able to cl...

Re: How to build an EMT conduit sphere?

Yes, that would be a pretty easy way to do it. a side benefit is that when we're halfway done, we have two complete domes to play with as opposed to one half-finished ball. also, it turns out someone has in fact already done this very thing and made a site all about it: http://www.luxfamily.com/jiml...

How to build an EMT conduit sphere?

For 2014 I would like to build a geodesic sphere--I was thinking a buckyball would be nice--as I am sure there will be nothing risky about having a giant football-shaped object lying around in an area known for high winds. Regarding that, of course it will be held in place with ground screws and guy...

Re: Does your theme camp embrace racial diversity?

Thank you for your candid responses to my post. Like the rest of the participants in this thread, I am trying to get a better grasp on the significant problem of racial monoculture at Burning Man. And I recognize that because I don't often express my views about this topic--I can't stand the heat, a...

Re: Does your theme camp embrace racial diversity?

I've read through this whole thread and, as far as I can tell, the only people who have contributed are white (i.e. Euro-American). Myself included. I generally don't see camps where the dominant ethnicity is third-world. No camps whose core membership is Central Americans, Africans (except for Sout...

Re: Fresh vegetables question

Yes, I've been reading all about ethylene release as part of figuring out my food storage for this year.

And did you know that onions and potatoes shouldn't be stored together, because the onions will make the potatoes sprout and then rot faster? I didn't.

compost drying

I'm thinking about designs for a compost dehydrator. Usually we just use a big burlap sack, with a bucket underneath to catch the liquid, and if the food scraps dry out enough then we burn them. But I'd like to make the compost dry out faster so we can burn more of it. I was thinking about having a ...

Re: Fresh vegetables question

Thanks for the advice! I was wondering about whether or not to ziploc the vegetables, as in whether or not they need to breathe to stay fresh. Doesn't sound like it, though.

Fresh vegetables question

We have dinner cooking shifts each night in my camp. I'm coming up early entry on 8/22, and then I'm cooking on Thursday, so any fresh vegetables I bring would have to last a week in a cooler. One of the dishes I have in mind has bok choy in it. Would this last for a week in a cooler? It's related t...

Van rental problem - Enterprise

On July 2, I reserved a cargo van with Enterprise for getting to our dustination. Called the location in Oakland today to confirm and make sure they were ok with renting for Burning Man, and the clerk said, "That van probably won't be available. The Burning Man festival is happening that week, and w...

Used billboards, white side facing out. They are cool, waterproof, and durable. Once you've covered over any logos, the ads make for interesting ceiling decoration. Fastening tip: along the edge of the tarp, grommet it with a double layer of vinyl--just snip a small square of billboard, put it on th...

With just under 140 hours left until I hit the 447, this seems like a good time to drop everything I'm doing and start making costumes. The whole vinegar alkaline playa thing is such an urban legend. The Playa dust is about as alkaline as Los Angeles tap water. This is not correct. The playa is alkaline. How do you react to this idea?

I've come several times before: 01/02/04. I have given various gifts at previous iterations of the festival. A few psychologically provocative toys here and there, the odd bottle of water, my labor, my performing arts. But I want to do something more intriguing, more original this year. I want to br...
