Re: No bikes in 2012?
I'd sure as shit rather have brought my bike and not used it than spend a whole week on the playa wishing I had brought it...Provided it's easy-enough to haul out there and back.

Replace the chain. Then, this year, do it right (like I do): The next morning after getting back from the Playa...Not two or three days later, but the very next day...Spray your bike down with vinegar/lemon juice/club soda/something slightly acidic. Watch and listen to it bubbling! Then, simply hose...

Definitely suggest the 14 to the 395. This is the route I've taken most times to the Burn, and the couple of times I've gone the I5 / 80 route, I've been screwed royally, either by construction (which always seems to be going on somewhere), or by Labor Day traffic jams...Which suck even worse. The 1...

My current bike has seen 3 burns, all with the same parts completely, aside from one new inner tube. I lube it thoroughly pre-playa with teflon lube, and have at it. The key is this: The very first thing I do when I get home...Like, within 24 hours!!!...is to douse the bike in vinegar or lemon juice...

My first Burn, I didn't shit once the entire time...Early entry on Sunday through Monday. I was stressed about it at the time, but looking back, I can only shrug my shoulders. I ate a SHIT TON of CLIF bars that year, too. But I also worked my ass off day and night all over our camp, and frolicked me...

For my money, the real annoyance of the JOTS is the never-ending CLACK! CLUNK! CLANK! of the doors swinging open and shut...All day and night. I've not noticed odor to be an issue when nearby. As for your distance: If you just plunk down anywhere, you'll be somewhere within 1/4 mile of one. Definite...

Yes! For that matter: Why not set up your tent butt-up against your car, drape the shade cloth over the top of the car (securing it to the car), extending a lean-to piece of shade cloth over the tent? Then just stake down the corners on the ground. You'll be missing two sides of coverage, but as lon...

Yes again on the Gaffers tape. They carry it at Guitar Center. It's generally as strong as duct tape, but much more forgiving on the goop. Only thing is that I still can't imagine that it won't leave some residue, considering the sun on the Playa. Also: Whatever you're doing with it, you're gonna ne...

Yes...Sweating is great. The part that you're missing though is that sweat doesn't do SHIT to cool you on the Playa (except for when you take off your hat under a shady place). As those who have been know, sweat generally evaporates so quickly on the Playa that you don't even realize you're sweating...

I've brought my 2006 Honda Accord to the last three burns. Haven't had any inkling of trouble with the engine/innards. Since most modern cars are made up so much of plastic and painted metal, there's not much damage to be done in a week of sitting on the Playa. I will say this, though: The first yea...

I only hope that people have the good sense to keep any mobile phone use EXTREMELY discreet (ie: In your fucking tent, by your fucking self, not walking along the Esplanade, shouting/giggling into it). Deodorant that DOESN'T Melt?

My best reasoning for making your own coffee as opposed to getting it at center camp is as follows...Imagine the scenario: You wake up WAY earlier than you should, given how much energy you expended the day before (and before that, and before that). This, because its too damn hot to sleep. You stumb...

I've completed building-out of our camp's water evaporator based on Mr. Polando's design. Yes indeedy, that is a loosely-set up tent. Looks a little rickety for Playa purposes to me by the pics, particularly if that's as loose as the canvas sits on the frame. If you can get the canvas taut, it would look more wind-worthy. The boxy shape is also not as preferred as a rounded shape, which ...
