I'm confused. See, to the best of my knowledge, absinthe per se was never illegal in this country. The substance thujone, which is the "active" ingredient in wormwood was declared a hazardous food substance by the FDA (NOT ATF which regulates liquor) and therefore it still is regulated in anything o...

Interesting idea, but I'm not sure how it gets any better results than the current ad hoc system of estimating the time. Granted, the further from the man you get, the harder it is to estimate the time (since the radial streets are further apart). It seems that it'd be a whole lot easier just to hav...

See, another real problem with going (and sneaking in) underage is that legally, you can't give your consent for anything . Your parents have to give their nod. This not only includes sex (come on boys, that joke is just ewwww) but also medical care. So the medics out there legally can't take care o...

What I'm thinking mdmf007 is looking at is a rectified generator, (lets not get into the semantics of generator/dynamo/whatever. It's all the same thing for our purposes.) although the loss from rectification is probably not worth it because if you're running incandescents, as stargeezer points out...

I agree with Mr. Bitter about the costumes, but think he's missing the point of the "key elements" mentioned earlier. Don't do a head-to-toe thing if you're into that. You'll never get it right for the playa which is demanding and unforgiving. It's best to find a few bits that are really really dist...

My mother would never go to bed at 10:00, unless she was with someone. I'd just bring 'em and stick 'em in an RV and not worry about them. Your folks probably have different interests than you, and chances are, they can figure out how to make their own friends, so I wouldn't worry too much. Although...

It would be a precedent victory. If it actually accomplished even a media circus then at least some political cost would be paid for the lies to the people. I'm not sure which is worse - me advocating a media circus or the fact that it would take one for there to be any impact at all in the boldface...

i lived with a bunch of art majors in college, and we used to argue on this point quite a bit. they called my beaded hangings a craft. they said dance is not an art, it's a craft. i was a dance major...and i found that quite insulting really. You know? I can't rightly see this. How could you argue ...

I had a friend who had a disorder that caused him not to sleep for extended periods of time. He finally got treatment after an exceptionally protracted period. After 5 days, he showed up at the hospital to present himself as a specimen of higher man. One who did not require sleep. He was admitted. A...

The toughest thing to reconcile is that even if you are doing something, if the media deems it so, you're doing nothing. I remember at the start of the war, there were pretty constant and consistent minimalizations of the size and impact the protesters were having. Of course, in densely populated ar...

Oh goody. Someone finally laid the crack down on Phelps and his cronies. They're the exact same folks that got evolution stricken from public school curriculum in that state. They're actually a pretty formidable political force in Kansas, scary as it sounds. I wonder what sort of backlash that's hav...

I certainly did not mean the current cleptocracy with its' Free Speech Zones and pre-vetted questioners as every public appearance. Well, some tips? Read, learn, memorize the survival guide. They have some very detailed instructions in there. Find locals. Check out the regional stuff for your area. Start early. See if you can't work out a trade for transport out there. You will not find a free ride, but you very well might find ...

How would you all feel about burning a folded flag placed in the temple? I wanted to leave the flag that was given to the family upon my father-in-laws death in the temple as a remembrance. My husband wasn't comfortable with doing that.

Yeah. I wanna amend my initial guess. But what he's done is demonstrate pretty clearly exactly why it's important to prosecute someone who pulls that kind of trick. That kind of attention is alluring and addictive. So what was that people were saying about letting him get off? You wanna amend your p...

I think you miss the point I was trying to make about "the world of my childhood". As a kid, I didn't understand everything that was going on around me. you think that's odd, there's a bio engineering lab that wants to make synthetic meat. Yeah that's right. Synth-meat.
