Re: 2012 Theme Camps - will you make it this year?
Looking at those numbers, even assuming a reporting bias, and making an assumption that even HALF of the people in those camps actually DID order tickets in the lottery (hopefully more, but lets be conservative), that means something like 44 out of 350 tickets ordered, or just over 12% were fulfille...

Re: Lets start talking about how to fix this
[quote]The claims of bleurose51 are not accurate when it comes to the Lamplighters. People who volunteer with Lamplighters are not guaranteed a ticket to Burning Man. Q. If I promise to work at Lamplighters, can I get a free ticket? A. Nope. But what you'll get in return will far exceed your expecta...

Re: Lets start talking about how to fix this
Random comments/responses: 1. Regardless of the lottery, this year has NOTHING to do with last year. Anyone who thinks that this year's ticket sales would have worked "the same" as last year's (lottery or not) is smoking crack. The problem this year was caused NOT by the lottery (although that didn'...

Re: 2012 Theme Camps - will you make it this year?
The 1.7 number quoted was the average number of tickets order per request, i.e., if 100 people ordered tickets, then 70 ordered 2 tickets and 30 ordered 1 ticket, i.e., 70*2 + 30 = 170/100 = 1.7. That number in no way told us how many ticket requests were actually submitted. As noted, it could have ...

Re: Doesn't the new theme get posted right after the Man bur
I specifically remember that both Beyond Belief (2003) and Vault of Heaven (2004) weren't announced until very early January a few weeks before tickets went on sale for those years. I missed 2005 and 2006 but I vaguely remember The Green Man (2007) being announced earlier in the fall, possibly very ...

Re: I want to make a mutant vehicle for BM
Hi, I worked DMV this year and it was quite eye-opening. First of all, BEFORE you even start to worry about the mechanics of an art car, come up with a concept of what you want to do. Read all the info about mutant vehicles on the burning man website (I assume you have already done that - if NOT, yo...

Maybe its even time to have more organized "viewing" areas. The worst thing this year was the number of people who tried to crowd in front of those who were already sitting or standing, as if coming late was justification to push and shove through the crowd to get a better view. Most of the time, pe...

Oh, and also maybe its time to move the people and vehicle perimeters around the Man burn back a ways. My last burn, 2003, had 33,000, this one was almost 50,000, almost a 50% increase. Yet, as best as I can tell, the perimeters for both people and art cars hasn't changed a bit. Anyone who understan...

I don't think anyone should think of themselves as "guilty" of bringing an RV. I have been to 5 burns, this is the first with an RV, and I don't feel guilty. As Jack pointed out, there were a LOT of pros and a few cons. As a relatively experienced burner, I used my RV as I think it should be used, a...

My wife had an interesting idea. 1. Start having a separate ticket for people and vehicles. Vehicle tickets should be based on size and should be limited. I.e., no more than say 5,000 RV tickets and 2,500 big truck tickets would be sold. Cut off sales for RV tickets on August 15 or some earlier date...

Banning RVs is probably an interesting thing to ponder. We went in an RV this year for the first time and it was very enjoyable (fresh shower water every day without the need to deal with greywater problems). However, I also realized that some of the "burning man" experience got lost in our shelter....

I guess this is just the pains of growth. I don't see any rational way to deal with it. What worked in a society of 10,000 works very differently in a society of 40,000. It isn't surprising that there needs to be more rules, better enforcement, etc. Most of the ideas suggested are unworkable. You ca...

My point was that the purpose of an "art car" is the "art", not the "car". In addition, a mutant vehicle MUST have a license and as with any license, it comes with obligations and responsibilities. So when you say if I have space because I am enroute to pick someone up, my point was precisely that t...

On the subject of golf carts, I saw several undecorated carts but when I approached them, learned that they were for disabled people. I think we should be careful before we jump to conclusions about those carts, they may be correctly licensed by the DMV if the users are handicapped. As far as I can ...

Ah, interesting. It does not appear that the DMV has any requirement for carrying passengers. I do think it SHOULD require that any art car en route that has empty space should be required to offer a ride to anyone who wants it, and once someone gets on, you should NEVER be required to exit at any p...

Here is a rant. I thought the so-called "reformatted" Playa Guide SUCKED ROCKS! In previous years, the listing of events with descriptions also included the times/dates of the events. By separating the descriptions and times, it made it damn near impossible to find out WHAT event had good hot raw se...

Unfortunately I don't think it would help all that much. What would happen is some enterprising entrepreneur will purchase 500 or 1000 tickets the day before ticket sales end from BRC LLC and then go into business selling those tickets are a REALLY STEEP premium and make a lot of money to boot. The ...

Entrance signs... can we read them anywhere else?
We all come to BRC through the front entrance (well maybe not ALL, but certainly 99.9% of us) and depending on when we get there, we have a good/not so good chance of being able to READ the entrance signs on the way to the security and greeter gates. This year, I was VERY tired when we arrived (driv...

The appropriate response to the PA jerks was "fuck you, I paid for my ticket." Do you think they could actually MAKE you move? Let THEM move and get a different shot. I agree, the commercialization of that was one of the reasons we decided to NOT go see that burn. However, I have to say, we were wat...

To be fair, a couple of blocks in from 3:00 and Landfill isn't precisely "prime real estate". We were at 2:30 and Intertidal and we saw a few theme camps like that too. On the other hand, if you wandered around between Arctic and Estuary from about 4:00 to 8:00 or around the plazas, you would find t...
