Currently I am a 'Bozeman-ite'-(MT) and I too have found that Burning Man is a complete mystery to most everyone I meet. I have heard that there is a group of locals, who meet at one of the downtown bars, that will be camping in the vicinity of '10 & E' this year. Anyhow...if you are in/near the Boz...
