Re: VIP makes me sad for them.

I can't speak to greenhouses gases but I can give you pretty accurate info on fuel consumption, which I think would track emissions. A typical passenger jet gets about 80 passenger-miles per gallon (dramatically better than a generation ago) so flying is not much different than 3 people in a car. Of...

Re: Toxic smoke, wednesday night, was that the burning lotus

I happened by as a tow truck was pulling the RV onto the playa. I didn't see the fire but - not to make light of it - the RV looked like the photos you see of bombed out buses - some parts were just skeleton. Fortunately the guy got out without injuries.

Re: 2015 turn key camps and self reliance

I think there are some cases where a form of turnkey camping can be justified, in particular for Burners who have to fly in from other overseas. It's not that some overseas Burners aren't self-sufficient, in fact we had a group in our village from Finland who actually brought and ran a sauna. But &q...

Re: 2015 turn key camps and self reliance

IMHO, we (ie. the larger Burner community) is spending too much time worrying about how a group of others Burn. Yes, we want participants, not tourists, but their numbers are much smaller than their press, and are unlikely to have a noticeable impact. I've always thought that these folks are getting...

My concern with CrowdRx is not their professionalism but simply their experience in operating in the self-contained environment that is BM. For example, although they are well-regarded for their work worth Coachella, which is the same size or maybe slightly larger than BM, Indio is a major metropoli...

Seriously have you considered a yurt? I built my own for about $750 in materials (we used Velcro). I have a fridge, A/C, and a queen-size air matress on top of a playatech (slot plywood) frame, though a regular mattress would fit too. I do camp in a camp with power but a Honda generator would easily...

I drove but my wife joined me midweek by BxB. Even though we're in the Bay Area, I found a cheap flight to Reno and she flew and took BxB for only about $40 more than bus from SFO. There is no doubt that this worked for us because and only because I took stuff in our car and our yurt came on the cam...

I actually also had a knife pulled on me, though in my case it wasn't nearly as frightening. I had taken a wrong heading towards center camp (yeah, it sounds impossible but I did) and I think I was on A or Rod's Road. I was carrying some fairly heavy pieces to my art installation inside the cafe. Wh...

Much better police presence on the playa this year - the truth is, if the cops are being cool and friendly, we really don't have an issue with them. My interactions with them, although limited, have to date been positive. I did notice what I think was an undercover team sitting in the café this year...

Re: Should PnP have to pay full price for Sherpia Tickets?

Why do you believe that PnP camps get DD allocations? In 2013, tickets were available on the open market for about $700. This year it was higher, maybe $1,000-$1,500. These camps probably can get all they need on eBay & StubHub at these prices, which is a relatively small part of their cost.

Who was the guy offering shots of Fireball on-playa?

I was offered a shot of Fireball Wednesday night late at a mobile bar around 6pm and maybe 500-1000' out into the playa. The guy was maybe 30-35 and I think part Asian. He was sitting at a corner of the bar, outside, I don't think we was officially part of the bar. Did anyone run into this guy or re...

Re: Bad Behaviour on the Playa

One problem is that the percentage of Burgins has been alarmingly high. Not that I am against growth, but it takes veterans to set the example, and when 40+% of the people are new, they see "non-burny" behavior and assume it's normal and OK. By contrast, when 90% of the people are "wi...

Our camp included a 30' aerial rig owned by one of our members, a trained professional aerialist. Because these things are not for amateurs, we always tied up the rope when she or another trained aerialist was not using the rig. Early in the week a drunk guy from another camp wanders over and starts...

Re: Plug n plays running amuk

I would agree with the posters that the issue of "sherpa" camps is one of participation, not money. A few weeks ago I spent $100 on a concert ticket. For that, I was entitled to hear Paul McCartney sing, and watch his light and fireworks show. There was no expectation that I need to give b...

I think for many people the issue is jealousy, but for me it's really just non-participation. Of course our camp went out onto the streets to invite people to ...

Incredible exodus. Left camp at 1:19pm Monday - made a 3-minute detour to Burner Express station. Full speed (10 mph) till seriously 300 yards before pavement, then a 3-4 minute delay. Pavement in 44 minutes from camp. OTOH the trip from pavement to Gerlach took probably a full hour, after that pret...

Re: Death, Taxes and Profits for your Burning Man ticket.

As frustrating as the situation may be, I was watching tickets actually sold on eBay and found that while the prices were still sky high, the number of tickets actually sold each day is maybe 10 or so. So it's not as if most tickets are in the hands of scalpers.

Re: What should a virgin do upon entry?

Welcome! It's never really gridlocked past greeters because greeters acts like a giant traffic light that only lets one car through per minute (and Gate is the same but with a longer delay), so no, there is no gridlock past it, just before Gate and maybe a tiny one at Greeters. If you are not campin...

In fact buying one of each works really well. Put the block on the bottom of your cooler, then your food, then the crushed ice. The block stays cold far longer than the crushed, you might replenish the crushed daily and the block less often.

So let me understand something about STEP. Since all tickets are the same at this time (whether you got them for $650 or $380) why does anyone need 72 hours to confirm that they want a particular ticket? There are no issues of "better seats" or "trusted sellers", so you should be...

Re: Has anyone dealt with delayed luggage?

FYI regarding customs, flying from Canada to the US is unusual because the U.S. maintains pre-clearance facilities at all major Canadian airports, so you do all of your customs and immigration at the airport in Toronto and then arrive as a domestic flight into the US. (BTW this is not done for secur...

Re: To be delivered and picked up

I don't think the one-time ticket can be used for two reasons: 1. The guy dropping off the RV has to have a second driver to bring him home, which means each would need a one-time pass. You cannot get it for him. 2. According to what I read you can only do this once - but theoretically a different p...

Re: Has anyone dealt with delayed luggage?

I understand your concerns but 50 minutes is almost always enough time for a bag transfer, plus today airlines usually pad their schedules to avoid having to report delayed flights to the FAA, so most flights get in 20 minutes before scheduled arrival. Also, since you are coming from Toronto (why no...

Just a thought - the Playa is darker than you think. You probably need less lumens that you think, especially if the projector is very close to the ball. It's a little late to start but some people have posted plans for DIY projectors using a color LCD panel and LED backlights - might be worth check...
