Re: Need tips building a 30 ft wooden octogon

Laura im not quite sure what you mean. i kind of understand, do you mean use a planer to make notches so it kinda jigsaws over the walls? Imagine you are building a wall of a house. There are multiple vertical studs, and you want a floor to ceiling diagonal brace. You start by nailing the studs to ...

Re: Need tips building a 30 ft wooden octogon

one pic that fits! https://www.facebook.com/groups/507851795900953/ Those diagonal braces aren't good enough to provide shear strength. The old fashioned way* to provide diagonal shear strength is this: Take a 1x4 board and lay it diagonally flat against the outside of a wall segment - corner to co...

Re: Art Car needs structural engineering help

I can tell you this - most of the types of conversions you are talking about involve attaching uprights directly to the frame, beefing up the suspension to handle the load of a second story, and building on the uprights, NOT on the body of the vehicle, as the sheetmetal will not support the weight....

diamondmoth, why are you even considering renting when you already have the perfect Burning Man vehicle? Put a new/rebuilt radiator and new hoses in it. Spare coolant overflow containers can be bought at any grocery store for about 99 cents. They come with a gallon of drinking water in them. Or you ...

Another bike booby trap idea: Make the steering freeze. In order to ride a bike, it is vital that the rider be able to make minor steering adjustments. If perhaps a ratcheting mechanism were to prevent the steering from going left of center, then the rider will soon wreck. Bonus points if the bike h...

Re: Line of motorcoaches hiding teepees

What was up with the row of 3-4 bigass motorcoaches parked end to end down 5:30 near esplanade? Do you perhaps mean 5:00 near Esplanade? The 5:30 radial didn't go all the way to Esplanade - 5:30 merged with Evolution between Adapt and Biology. Speaking of RV camps, along (I think) Biology someplace...

8' 2 x2 like dork says 1.5 feet into the ground would leave 6.5 feet above. Using lumber like this it might also be better to tie (plastic ties) the fence to the posts) even if you feed the post through the fence (and a 2 x2 would feed easies) you will still need to secure the fence to the posts. A...

In 2008, my BRC neighbors had arrived in a similar sized car. There were four of them. They had a roof mounted storage container - and no bikes. Supposedly, between Reno and BRC, the back seat passengers were wedged in amongst a bunch of water jugs. In other words, what you're considering is very do...

As a first timer maybe I'm all wet, ... but... Having the Wheel projecting so far beyond the Esplanade was a real barrier. I hardly ever got to the 6 to 10 o'clock side of the city. I'd reach the Wheel and decide to turn off in a different direction. I also never got to the center camp tent, not eve...

I don't think you can have your vehicle in walk-in camping. Parked along the road or some such, not next to the tents? That's what the 2007 Survival Guide implies: Walk-In Camping A marked area immediately behind the south side of Black Rock City will be reserved for Walk-In Camping. You will need ...

Walk in camping - small tent vs the wind?

Hi from a newbie: I love camping out in the desert. I have my minimalist extreme desert camping formula down pat. However, I've never been to Burning Man. From reading stuff here, it sounds like the conditions at BM are actually much less extreme than what I'm familiar with. So anyway, I've bought a...
