Re: Time from SoCal

regarding tribal police in Schurz I've never had an issue nor felt like I would. Regarding small towns and cops in general you'll very likely look different from most vehicles in the town. And you'll get noticed by a lot of people, some of them cops. Go the speed limit or below, pay attention, look ...

Re: Time from SoCal

If you hate Reno don't go . . . take the back route. Spooky Desert is surreal, peaceful, mind clearing . . . great prep for the playa, imho. Hawthorne is a fine place to stay, though it can be a bit weird, feels like an abandoned city stuck in time. Which I find appealing, but anyway, I've stayed se...

Re: Time from SoCal

Yeah, I agree, best advice is plan to rest and replenish somewhere before the final stretch. You'll be tired already from preparing for the event and it can easily take up to 8 hours from the time you leave Reno to the time you find a camp. I've pushed myself to make it on a precise schedule, gaugin...

Yeah, know that they are profiling incoming cars for an easy bust - not fair, not legal, but a fact. Keep your vehicle as tight and clean as possible, sit upright and pay attention (seriously, body language matters a lot), etc. Stop before turning on to 447 and take a pause to assess you and passeng...

So I have a somewhat different perspective . . . I lay most of the blame on the parents or guardians of the teenager. If you take a teenager up to Burning Man you damn well better have some idea how they are going to act and react to the events at B'Man. You damn well better trust their judgement, b...

Yeah, one more thing . . . had you not consented and not admitted to a crime then it is unlikely they would have searched based on the very weak "can't read your license" probable cause. They would likely have known that wouldn't hold up in court, and had they searched that is definitely s...

@PatternInterrupt . . . Now what ? I'd pay the fine and be thankful it wasn't worse. You and friend freely admitted to a crime that there was no evidence you had committed, you then proceeded to hand over the evidence and were just given a ticket, not arrested. The survival guide very clearly states...

As for the burned up trailer, I spoke to a guy who was camped right next to it. There was a guy and his daughter staying in it . . . they had rented it from one of the "rent a wreck" trailer/RV guys out of Reno (they have a stock of older trailers and RVs that they rent (cheap) and deliver...

I was riding from center camp to my camp (Opulent Temple) and saw the cops ripping across the playa. My first thought was "wow they are driving fast", second was "damn, must be something really bad happened". Got back to camp, saw 15 or so cop cars, bunch of cops standing around ...

2 general types of wind events will cause failure . . . First is force . . . think of a 60 mph sustained wind pushing on any direction. What does that do to the poles and support system ? Watch the weather, if it looks sketchy stay at your camp for the first good wind . . . you need to be there to see what fails and fix it or hold it down until you can. I have a mountain bike I've been taking out for 12-14 years . . . when I get home I blast it with compressed air, then wash it well with vinegar and water, lube it and store until next year. Replaced the chain once, otherwise it has been maintenance free. I've found the playa dust isn't nearly as ba...

Likewise. What I try to do is tailor my brightness to the surroundings . . . deep dark playa I can get by with less, busy esplanade needs brighter. A hat or other head piece with a circle of elwire is great, even just a single red light on top is quite visible. Full moon Thursday so the busiest even...

Something to watch out for in Nevada is that many of the towns don't have "reduced speed ahead" warning signs. In theory the roads are straight enough that the posted signs should be visible from as distance, in practice late afternoon or evening after being on the road all day makes it ea...

You can return via the scenic route with only 1 steep grade heading up to the Mono Lake vista. Still a long climb up to Mammoth, though a more gentle grade, and 2 steep, slow downhills, so overall still more time than the spooky route.

There are 2 killer grades on the 395, one right before Mammoth and right after Mono Lake, I grind up those at about 25 mph in a Jeep w/ a fairly heavy trailer. Then there's one grade on the 182 that is about equivalent to the grade on the 6 that is just before the turn onto the 360. The spooky deser...

Re: Theme camp assigned tickets transferable?

the first thing you should try is find out if your theme camp can use the ticket back to someone else who wants to camp with them. That is both the correct thing to do for the camp and in the spirit of how the org allocated tickets. I'm kind of surprised that the org didn't cancel STEP registrations...

I'd have to say the storm post event 2001 was the most amazing I've ever experienced. Mid-day (Tuesday, I think) the wind kicked up, then blew at a steady 30-40 knots, gusts higher. Well, interesting issues raised, I think the main one being that Burning Man has come to a certain point in time where identity and the sum of all effort up to this point in creating that identity are in question. No reason to even give out the code until 2 weeks before the event, keep numbers out of circulation. Early arrival passes aren't given out until a few weeks before, it works fine. I think as long as everyone knows the only way to buy a real ticket is from the org then you'd have to be pretty darned ...
