Re: Building Shower in to Container
The advantages as we see them: 1. Less dust (convenient, but not that important..we're used to the dust) 2. Better shower quality when cold/windy (a big plus) 3. Shifting on playa construction to off playa construction. The third point is the big one for us. We strive to do as much of our constructi...

Building Shower in to Container
This year, for the first time, our camp will be having a container shipped out instead of doing the usual truck thing. One of the ideas we've been considering is building the camp shower in to the container. We'd use a standard shower stall and gravity fed water (or worst case the usual sun showers)...

Re: Art Car Storage in the Bay Area
FYI, I contacted American Steel and they said they were getting out of the storage business.
If anyone knows differently, I'd love to hear about it, as they are across from my house and would be the ideal location.

Re: Art Car Storage in the Bay Area
Thanks for the thoughts...we'd really like to stay at nimby (much rather give them our money than some faceless self-storage place). We don't want outside storage if we can help it (fake fur and bay area weather don't play nicely) and we're not forkliftable (which would definitely help. My guess is ...

Art Car Storage in the Bay Area
We've been building at nimby which has been a great experience, but would love to find something cheaper for long-term storage when no daily access/work is required. Storage needs to be inside, as we're big and furry and wouldn't play well in the rain.
Any suggestions?

Cloud 9 - a floating dream
9 o'clock stalwart The Geisha House has wanted to do a community friendly art car for years. All that was missing was a theme to inspire us. While wandering the playa last year we found it and now we've been spending the year creating it. http://www.facebook.com/CloudNineArtCar We look forward to ta...

Re: Art Car needs structural engineering help
BBSue, Definitely down with much of what you say...we were planning on attaching to frame and not the body (for the obvious reasons you reiterated). We got as far as uprights, but really don't know how much is needed in terms of struts, counter-weight, etc... to make it safe. That's what I'm hoping ...

Art Car needs structural engineering help
We're longtime (10+ years) theme camp organizers doing our first big art car. We have a vehicle and are ready to get started, but need some "real" structural engineer input. The big issue is that we're adding a second level (deck) on the roof of the base vehicle (dodge van body on a half ton truck c...

Resin/fibreglass usage
Can anyone give some pointers on usage of fibreglass and/or resin (website with detailed howtos would be perfect...or locals in the bay area to assist in return for beer and art car rides on the playa)? We need something that hardens translucent (not completely transparent...we will light it from th...

Great, I'll go with them and plan on bringing 1" rebar as an emergency backup. Do you have a reasonably priced source for them in the bay area? [quote="Bob"]Not exactly sure what kind of screws he used or what the problem was. The Cafe uses dozens of 40" anchors year after year, and larger anchors a...

That's perfect Bob. I cannot thank you enough.
Bob, can you comment on this burner's experience with ground anchors:
http://dome.zillabit.com/homedome.html#anchoring
was he just using them wrong or was it playa-condition dependent, or something else altogether?

Re: 25G Rohn tower installation
Great info all and special thanks to Bob. I will invest in the earth screws with the one 1" rebar as backup. How difficult are those earth screws to remove from the playa? We've had some bad experiences with anchoring that we couldn't remove from the ground without serious excavation (great for hold...

Our current plan for anchors is 1" rebar, which we used last year with our 25' tower. Anything less than the 1" was getting bent. My big concern is the heavy weight/high surface area as these towers were meant for ham radio gear, not huge steel ducks. Still, I think we'll be fine for the week. Obvio...

25G Rohn tower installation
We're planning on utilizing a 35' 25G Rohn tower to mount our camp mascot and would love some feedback from playa-savvy engineers on guying requirements. According to the Rohn guidelines, a single set of guylines should be enough for that height in any winds the tower is rated for, but we've been co...

Barcode email messed up
I went to print out my early arrival barcode late last night in preparation for my departure this morning only to find the pdf would NOT open! Is there anyone I can contact to get it re-emailed to me? This is not a scam...I'm not looking for a new barcode, but simply to have the one that was sent to...
