Re: post what you didn't like about 2011 here
And regarding bars--or any camp that requires you to "perform" for whatever they are "gifting away"--is lame. It always surprised me when we invite people to our camp for a root beer float how often they ask "what do we have to do for it?". NOTHING, Just show up! That's what gifting...

Re: post what you didn't like about 2011 here
#1 LASER POINTERS - Jesus Christ. I don't really remember there being any last year. At least not enough that I noticed. This year it seemed like there were 50 of them spazzing out on the Horse, Man and Temple. I thought it was really irritating. #2 General Disrespect or more likely people just not ...

I ended up building a Monkeyhut, that should do the trick.

Re: Great Shade Structure Source!
This structure looks awesome, but I can't seem to find it for sale anywhere online. Maybe it's not being made anymore? Anyone have an active link to it or something similar?

Does anyone else feel like the Art pieces on the playa are getting worse the last few years? Art continuing to get worse?
Does anyone else feel like the Art pieces on the playa are getting worse the last few years? I mean, the Woman was cool, the Theater was great, but it felt like so many pieces this year were one step above a High School student's art project. The "Cat Shelves" were just embarrassing. There were quit...

I never understood the people that say "the playa will tear up a good bike". it seems to be an urban myth. Although I've never been there in the rain, maybe that's a different story. My first year, I was all paranoid about bringing my mountain bike, so I bought a used one on craigslist. It started t...

I've slept in my tent for 2 years now. Just a cheap $35 dome tent from Big 5. I upgraded the stakes and bought tiny spring clamps and clamped thrift store bedsheets around the tent to the poles. So it looks a bit like a geodesic dome. I also brought 4 10 pound weights and stuck one in each corner of...

I took my specialized last year in the madness of the dust storms and it was fine. I just hit the chain with some wd-40 in a rag every few days and relubed with my regular lube. After the burn, I just powerwashed it at the carwash when I washed my other gear. I never even got it cleaned at the bike ...

I'm thinking about buying some thrift store sheets and using my spring loaded hand clamps to clip the sheets onto the fiberglass support poles. It would help with the dust and catch the first wave of heat, while still allowing some airflow between the sheet and the tent, if only a few inches. Guess ...
I like the idea of reinforcing the centre pole that's already there. The key I've found when I've put it up is making sure it's perfectly vertical, which requires that each tie-down point be at the same tension as all the others or else it ends up lopsided.
I used ratchet s...

This was something I was concerned about my first trip. I assumed the Temple would be a very quiet place, which it ended up not being, especially at night, almost disrespectfully so, I thought, considering what most people are going there for. So I hiked all the way out to the last art installation ...

It's not all THAT bad. I've been in and out of my truck throughout the week and even slept in it when the weather has gotten really bad. Just use common sense when you open the doors, i.e. don't do it in windstorms and if you do open the door, open the one opposite the wind. There was dust in my tru...

Re: Dust getting into my vehicle's engine???
Your engine will be fine. The only problem I've had is dust getting into my vent system. Turning on the AC on the drive home after my first burn unleashed a dustcloud inside my truck.

I will also say that I had a run in with the BLM guys, or whatever they are. The "police". I was out walking in the open desert to get away from all the noise and I stopped to put some glow sticks on. They drove up and hit me with the spot. For a second I thought I wasn't allowed to be out there. Th...

I didn't get harassed, exactly, but I did have to deal with a total buffoon. I managed to pass the will-call entry in the white-out on Monday morning. So when I got up to the first gate, the guy told me to pull over to the side of the road and someone would take me through to will call. They let me ...

You mean: Yeah, that's what I meant. I'm not sure why it doesn't work for me, I'm using what appears to be the proper code. Anyway. I'm thinking about using Reed Fencing for the sides. I thought about backing my truck partially into the unit with the tailgate down and just sleeping in the bed instead of a tent, it just starts to get a little tight with an 8x8 unit. I'm trying to keep it to 8' 2x4's. As for rope coming loose on my tie downs, I was going to ratchet strap from a big ...

I'm going to have the tarps cover everything framed by the 2x4's, so the tent will be shaded as much as the main area. I guess I'll bring some extra 2x4's along to brace it up after I give it a good shove to see how sturdy it is. I can throw a buttress or two in there. I thought about the EZ ups, bu...

Thoughts on my shelter
This is my first year building my own shelter. I opted for 2x4's since I've seen some of the PVC structures whipping around pretty good. WHat do you think? I'll wrap the whole thing in silver tarp since camo mesh is so friggin' expensive here. ...
