Re: got any PHOTOGRAPHY tips?

The dicapac bags work well and are a good way to protect your camera. It's what we use. You won't want your flash at night BUT if you have a canon DSLR without an AF assist lamp the flash can be useful for that feature. I'm bringing a 50mm 1.4 prime lens and not planning to change it ever. Photograp...

Re: Solenoid question

Remove then adjust and lube the solenoid part. I've had this issue on my valves before. Try taking the nut off the probably black plastic cover over and remove the whole piece form the valve. Look for marks, damage, etc and replace if necessary. If not try spraying with a bit of dry lube and reassem...

The Gate Access Radio broadcast did more harm than good.

Our strategy was to pack on Sunday and listen to the radio for an opportune time to leave. Our plan failed due to inaccurate and not updated radio information. GAR seemed like it should be the authoritative source for exodus information. Unfortunately it was a recorded message that was rarely update...

Re: Dr. Dust's 'V' style Rebar Method- 10 steps to perfect V

Getting rebar out isn't hard. You need a crow bar, vice grips, and a small board or block of wood. -clamp the vice grips on the rebar close to the ground but with enough space to get the crow bar under it. -set the board on the ground and put the crow bar's point against the board -place the crow ba...

Re: Q2-Wounded burner on the playa. Gokart/scooter/bike side

I've run go-ped style stand up gas scooters one year. The maintenance made them a hassle and just not worth it. Folks also hate the noise and exhaust. They were nice while they worked but broke down on me about half way through the event. I'd avoid a gas scooter and would be a bit skeptical of the e...

DCHP works on the concept of leasing a dynamic IP. When you refresh you're typically renewing the lease. Most of the time you get the same IP back unless your computer is offline for some amount of time which can be anywhere from two hours to two days. After which they may have assigned that IP to s...

Re: Serial Rapist on the playa

I was playing DJ at Emerald City the night the victim entered into our camp. While I wasn't directly interacting with her I was part of the camp that found her and had a good vantage point to observe. I can relay what happened at least from our perspective. A young woman came into our camp in a high...

Re: RV Catastrophes: Post your story!

2008 my first year. Newly purchased 1 Ton old diesel truck heavily loaded pulling an even older 23' travel trailer. We made it to alturas where we started smelling gear oil a few minutes before a huge BANG and the truck no longer would go into gear. We blew the transmission. Had to leave it with a l...

I also spent a lot of time and effort going down this road only to eventually give up and buy a pair of the honda style "quieter" inverter generators.

Make yourself a leak detector. Dish soap and water in a spray bottle. Once everything is hooked up open the valve on the tank and spritz every junction and fitting. If you see bubbles don't use it until you've fixed the leak.

Did two of these one year. Both gas powered with no seats. I bought them used from craigslist. Spent days in the garage fixing them up and repairing stuff. Bought large tires, etc. Spent a few more days applying fake fur and LED lights. Mounted a fire extinguisher to one and a basket to the other. T...

Re: Multifaceted approach for a multifaceted community

Interesting thoughts. However, how do you account for the people who put in literally hundreds of hours but opt out of early entry and let other crew members handle that? (I'm lumping in art collectives here with the Theme Camps). Showing up for Early Entry is important but by no means a measure of...

Re: Confession: I'm sorry I defended the stupid ticket lotte
Your post comes closest to the answer. The price of tickets needs to be raised as high as necessary to reduce demand to the numbers the permit will allow.
The scalper market will effectively do this anyway.... the difference is where the extra money ends up.

Re: Lotto... tempting regular folks into scalping?

OP well said. Not just psych 101. It's economics 101. My biggest wish for the borg next year is to hire a decent economist to help figure out a ticket distribution system that works. We're all hoarders now. Which is cool. I'm all for promoting selfishness if it helps teach a good lesson. Now the big...

Free market economics

Market economics are not a choice people make. It's not a matter of right and wrong. It's simply a law of nature. We behave this way because it simply is human nature. A few good yet statistically insignificant people can change but the vast majority will not. It is those large statistics that actua...

Re: Pumping water out of 55gallon drum

Just did this myself. With some PVC, vinyl tubing, and an RV water pump. I created a dip tube with 2" PVC topped by a ball valve, 90 deg L, and a garden hose male threads on the end. Glued together with PVC cement. Make sure you cut some small notches on the bottom of the dip tube. You don't want it...

Re: pumping out evap pond at the end

The easiest solution is to stop adding water for the last 24-48 hrs. We've had a rule that the evap pond is closed after saturday morning (last showers, etc). This will allow enough time for the evaporation process to complete and you should be left with dry plastic to rollup. If you're going to pum...

Re: Keeping an air-cooled vehicles engine cool in traffic??

I've owned and worked on several air cooled VWs. You may not even have a problem. The air cooling is driven by a big fan that blows air across fins on you head and cylinders. This fan turns even at idle and should by design provide sufficient cooling for your engine under a range of temperatures. Th...

After much research and soul searching I decided to go with 2 ig2000p kipor generators. I bought refurbished models that were about 60% the cost of the EU2000. So, I wonder what happens after you say: "Sir, I do not consent to a search". Does law enforcement just let you go or does that just encourage them to make you their top priority with no leniency? Positive LEO moment

We were camped at 7:00 and esplanade. As of Sunday night all but three of us had left and our camp was eerily empty.
