Re: Latitude coordinate for 2018?

That datum will not be posted until the golden spike gets placed in early August.

You can get approximate data from last years Google Earth and whatnot.

You can get some historical data from William Keller’s site and the work he did on GPS maps :

Re: Is anyone bringing a plate compactor?

Just thinking of the physics here ...

What would be the point other than creating a crap ton of dust?

It’s already a clay dry lakebed.

Other than the crunchy crust that would pulverize, will it get any flatter?

Re: OK or not: DJ-style "dancing" bike-mounted laser?

Also, please note this isn’t some random trample on your fun kind of thing. BRC is literally right next to a legit FAA Registered airport with commercial flights operations. The penalties can be horrible if there is any kind of incident. Just don’t bring it. Weddings and mitzvahs aren’t held on airp...

Re: Controlling LEDs over Wifi?

WiFi is sketchy out there with all the GoPro gizmos and whatnot. See if you can nab some 900Mhz Ubiquiti gear or similar. Tune the power down and there you go. Check with the BORG if they are registering 900Mhz out there. There is another thread somewhere here mentions radio registration. Search a b...

Re: I forgot to register my camp! Dodgeball!

Here is a creative solution:

Renegade

Do something different, build it on the airport road or in deep playa.

Or even better, just have an off year where you just go and have fun without the theme camp.

Re: Using EMT and PVC for the same shade structure

PVC is not structural unless under heavy strain in one plane. It works for a Quonset when bent into a semi-circle but does nothing when unladen.

Why not just pick up a Costco carport and be done with it. Has everything you need in one box and is proven.

Re: Need a water valve connected to a water sensor

But I don't think the toilet valve will help; I need to stop the flow of a different part of the hose when the water level drops, not the part right where the level is measured. Think about this a bit more. It will do exactly what you want. An upside-down float valve will be always-open until the b...

Re: Need a water valve connected to a water sensor

Ambiguous question. Is the hose that will “run out of water” - the trigger, pressurized or just flow with minimal pressure? Is this all gravity fed or is there a pump? My guess is that you will need to fabricate something custom for your rig. If you can use water level, as in a float, the solution i...

Re: 2018 Internet Connectivity Update

Just to clarify, 5GHz and 5.8Ghz are different bands. WiFi runs on 5GHz and 2.4Ghz. ISM has license free spectrum at 5.8Ghz as well and some vendors use that for narrow-beam backhauls as is the case on the UBNT gear used on playa. 3.65 IS licensed, but there is a changeover going on and all existing...

Re: 2018 Internet Connectivity Update

If someone really needs reliable comms for their project out there in the dust, there are way better frequencies available than the WiFi spectrum. 900Mhz is a solid choice and UHF propagates well. 3.65Ghz is also in limbo right now with rule changes and new spectrum auctions so old NN based gear is ...

Cu is grand fungicide, but you’re on to something there.

A dab of bleach daily in the pond would go a long way for bacterial suppression.

Yes, dust gets everywhere but does not impact the evaporation. It actually adds surface area.

Heat is not what evaporates water to any large degree on the Playa. It is the arid air, often in single digit of vapor percentage. A cheap plastic saw-horse, a towel draped over it with both ends dipped in and whicking the gray water will be way more efficient than any copper construct you build. Su...

I haven’t talked to Jim in ages but Spanky’s Wine Bar sounds like a hand-and-glove fit. A parachute is the absolutely worst material for shade.

It is translucent nylon.
It is designed to catch air and create a sail.

Unless you are building a heat oven or sauna, there are much better choices available.
