Re: mechanic question

Make sure you follow these S3 rules, as this is all Playa related. 1. Whiskey and/or Whisky are required. 1cc every 5 minutes for the first hour will meet the minimal acceptable standards of S3. 2. PBR ice cold to maintain hydration. 3. Have a friend come over and hold the 20# ABC extinguisher in on...

Re: mechanic question

its kinda high pitched for a normal sound , very noticeable with air cleaner off . My other old fords never made that sound , but none of them had a holley carb. The fact you gotta take the air filter to hear it better indicates the sound is originating in the bore of the barrel. I’d say your likel...

Are you sure that isn’t just the normal breathing of the barrel through the closed butterfly?

They do make a wee sucking sound in normal operation.

Re: Ratchet strap size?

The small straps will be fine. If a wind gusts hits it such that you get anywhere close to failure of a strap, that EMT will bend and buckle long before the strap snaps or anchor pulls. Hard to say how many and in which location without seeing a drawing of the 20 x 40, where entry and exit points ar...

Re: Kodiak 10x14 Simple Shade Structure and PVC Question

Curious how significant the difference between a proper EMT/Monkey shade structure and the draped Aluminet in terms of temperature inside the tent. Any thoughts? Shade of any kind will buy you an hour of extra sleep, more or less, with a full canvas tent. A good canvas tent, an RV with no A/C, does...

If you've given it some critical thought and used sound materials and logic, it usually stands. And there in lies the truth of Playa entertainment. 80K people 40% are virgins per the census from ‘17 8 x 4 —> 32K fresh souls. Critical thought and logic dictates that on average 1 in 4 are as gifted a...

Every Dpw shade structure is built with 4x4s and augered holes. Hundreds of holes and trenches are dug every year. They are allowed, provided they are done correctly. Correct, and the tranches are for power distribution and whatnot. Also other large camps also trench for Tesla coils etc. You gave y...

Re: Kodiak 10x14 Simple Shade Structure and PVC Question

Nosys, you are tossing both EMT and PVC concepts but talking about a Monkey Hut - I.e. a Quonset. Let’s slow down and sort some of the excitement. :) A Monkey Hut is built from PVC pipe that is bent and tensioned to give it great strength in a single dimensional plane. Many of these are arranged lik...

PB, these scenarios can be sliced and diced any which way. The issue is a complex system. You cannot model it with such simplifications and expect to see anything other than small details. You have to consider the whole system. With tickets scarce, an evolved caste system (directed sales), large inv...

Re: "Internal" Guy lines for EMT structures?

If it’s sturdy EMT and you have reasonable spans, it is the best way to go.

Now if you do a very long shade structure, it may be good to have some extra lateral strength in the middle.

Use common sense and have enough rope to add if needed.

Re: Foam mattress sizing

Nope. It’s a commodity item whose utility is not greatly influenced by the Playa environment. Besides, a mattress is very much tied to personal choice ; hard vs soft, warm vs cool, etc. Now the more interesting question is “on the ground” or a cot. There is where it’s at. A cot is recommended over a...

I'd rather use nylon as it won't rust but I heard it can melt.
If nylon were to melt, we all be dead.

Perhaps you are confusing nylon with hot-glue.

Hot-glue can soften and get undone in direct sunlight, especially when playa dust is added.
