Re: Rest In Peace

But for ePlaya, I would never have known Rosie lived in Longview, WA. Thanks! Feminist fantasy and science fiction writer Ursula K Le Guin - October 21, 1929 – January 22, 2018 - passed yesterday. She would have been a welcome burner. She was not afraid to call out commodification of literature. htt...

Re: OK so what the hell did I miss (the good old days)?

The event is always changing! Camps come and go, and you will find your own favorite camps in any year. I started after the shooting gallery era. I think there were more camping clothes and fewer costumes in the late 90s. Costumes and the visual design of camps really picked up in the early 00s as t...

Maybe I was too terse. I'm a huge supporter of SRL and have seen them twice. Explicitly: - "never sell out," decommodification, etc. is temporary; BM will never sell out, right? - SRL's contribution to the event is huge both in aesthetics and individuals who cross-fertilized creative SF pr...

Re: Ready to come home. Finally.

Welcome. Sometimes we have useful things to say. Our common advice is meet your regional in person, read all the instructions, make a packing list, costumes, don't over-commit in the first year and leave some time after you return to processes - I take a few days before returning to work. Not everyo...

Re: Shipping Container for Kodiak Tent

As Ratty said, they are heavy. You don't want the packing to add to that. I would pack the tent and poles+stakes separately. Tent in a heavy duty duffel, even wheeled duffel, ideally with playa capable wheels. For the poles it might be a good idea to protect the fitting ends from dents. So a ski bag...

The Burning Man Org database holds all the events participants contribute. It can be downloaded through an API by geeks. Welcome to ePlaya. Ola, Do you guys know anything about camping at random places? Are there any laws in USA that prohibits you to do so? E.g. Only designated areas or camping spots are allowed. How about creating a campfire? Much of the USA West is land owned by federal, state and local government a...

Re: Like Access to ePLAYA? Last Best Chance To Save Net Neutrality Today!

This is a strange thread. But the topic is in my realm. Net not-neutrality is entirely due to video viewing on the net. It makes up about 75% of net traffic today, and rising. Net not-neutrality allows last mile service providers to omit providing universal service. They do not have to provide servi...

I think the answer for saving Burning Man culture in general is to have service camps, theme camps, music camps do their utmost best to share the Burning Man ethos through their relationships with their volunteers, campers and guests. Thanks! And agree. One of our major debates on ePlaya is virgin ...

There are several costume camps on the playa that encourage all visitors. They collect costumes year around. They create a great interaction between costume advisors and costume experimenters. Mr Token, completely agree that the event will end in a liability cluster-f*ck, death, injury, wildfire, communicable disease or rain stranding! The glitter comment is an appeal to individual year-round behavior. Our use of plastic is a Faustian bargain.

Time to phase out glitter

I worked on a beach plastics cleanup. Once you look on the beach, you will see it's everywhere. But the tiniest stuff you cannot even see. That includes microbeads: plastic particles in body soaps as an exfoliant and it includes glitter. I know glitter is a burner and raver addiction, but it is time...

Burning Man is all about ostentatious display of identity. Burners have a choice. Or display identity by a machine they rented? I am...

I agree that politicians practice "legal" corruption. But I don't believe it is so FUBAR we should give up, or vote third party for to protest. Here is another way to look at it. Most voters are not paying attention. Some presidential year elections get OK turnout, but we can do better. Of...

Welcome! You are already on the path of getting ready! The event is just a wilderness campout with 70,000 people and a lot of dust. The monkey hut has many discussions, photos and websites. They are inexpensive, you can resuse the pipe for irrigation at home, the tarp and rope is reuseable at home. ...
