Re: Segways in Burning Man

A camp mate brought a low Segway. I borrowed it a few time and it was a blast. It took just a few minutes to master. https://smedia.webcollage.net/rwvfp/wc/cp/21425791/module/eandsinternational/_cp/products/1463082753464/tab-fd52b086-7532-4d79-bcd3-eef84745987c/c66999b2-95b1-4faa-ab78-74cc66901ea8.j...

Re: Lost Black Fur Hat, unlined, small tag inside says Italy

Please understand that I am well aware of that. However in years past , this year was my 10th, I have posted a few lost items of seemingly insignificant value and I have been reunited with the same. Considering the limited posts in general regarding lost and found items here, (I did review before I...

Re: Our Playa Homes

I got the "playa home" feeling my first year in Black Rock City. I arrived after dark during a dust storm and several people helped my set up my tent. (I had never really camped before) I move my stuff into the tent and poked around the area a bit before going to sleep. The following morni...

Re: Lost Black Fur Hat, unlined, small tag inside says Italy

Yes I did try lost and found and just received their reply. They suggested I try here as a last ditch effort . I've posted here in past years and reunited items with 3 different folks. Why harass me with questions? Quenifer, there are so many thousands of lost pieces of clothing on the playa. Prett...

Re: Generator rental and delivery

Another thing to consider, if you're not a placed camp, you would be finding a spot to camp once you get to the playa to set up your tent. The delivery of this generator would most likely have to have a location prior to the driver heading out for the delivery. (spotty or no cell phone service) As m...

Remember the OP is attending Burning Man and planning on being solo for his first time. Is air conditioning required? What other devices is he planning on running that he needs 3000 watts of power?

Geez people, 25,000 watts? Use LED bulbs and energy efficient freezers and appliances.
A $600 7,000 watt generator should light up the whole freakin' place!

Re: Generator rental and delivery

I see you're planning on 2018 for your first year. I will say that 2017 was really the first very oppressively hot year I can remember. Most years I am out and about during the day on the open playa or visiting other camps. The nights are usually cool, so no air conditioning is required. One of the ...

Re: Generator rental and delivery

What are you planning on running on this generator? We had a generator that gave out half way during the week, and I brought a 750 watt power inverter that clamped on to the battery of one of our rental cars. This ran all the camp LED lighting, a small refrigerator and the lights in several trailers...

I also agree with the advice NOT to even volunteer at all her first time out. Go, see what it’s all about, then decide things like that. And if she’s dead set on volunteering, there are on-playa volunteer opportunities. Can I also agree with this! Your friend will not be bored and looking for somet...

Re: Preventing Bike Theft / Finding 'Lost' Bike Ideas

And here I was thinking a simple bike lock was sufficient. For an extra $6-10 it wouldn’t be that bad. Initial cost on the network would be under $5k and some very low level power requirements on playa. The app development would be the bigger challenge but I may already have the resources required ...

Re: Preventing Bike Theft / Finding 'Lost' Bike Ideas

I’m thinking about setting up a LoRa Network and outfitting our entire camp’s bikes with very small GPS/transmitter rigs to track all of the bikes. It will provide not only pinpoint accuracy but it would be pretty easy to develop an app that would actually log all the locations the whole week to se...

Exchanging business cards on the playa? I have never seen that in all the years I've been going.

Re: Now that I've been to Burning Man...

From my perspective, you broke one of the first rules---"don't have expectations". You envisioned what you thought Burning Man was to be prior to heading to the playa, and it wasn't what your mind expected. Burning Man is a city with some very nice and open people, but it's still a city. N...

Re: Preventing Bike Theft / Finding 'Lost' Bike Ideas

What I have seen evolve over time was a larger percentage of people coming to Burning Man with no bike. Either they would find a "yellow bike" but more likely they would just snag an unlocked bike. That bike of course would be abandoned along the way. The victim of the theft might take ano...

Re: How You Feel Standing On The Playa - Thursday After The Event Is Over?

I know that feeling. I was out on the playa in 2008 a month after Burning Man ended. I drove fast then got out of the van and just enjoyed the wind. I found the circle where center camp was and saw lots of orange cones that probably meant the moop needed attention. It was great seeing it, but I imag...

The sit down motorized bike rule was relaxed a few years back and it seemed to be working out fine. Then the abuses started and the overpowered ones showed up and people we screaming along on them to get where they were going fast. Like everything else, now a good thing is in jeopardy.

Re: Any Go/Weiqi players planning to attend 2018?

In defense of GVI, 2018 will be the first year on the playa. The thought is what do you do to keep busy during those long days of boredom and down time. There will be almost no down time in BRC---unless you really want it. It's a non-stop, 24 hour a day city. There are dozens of events going on simu...
