Re: Who is Terbo Ted? Should workers get paid for running camps on the playa?
Equating it to homeless and the system that produces them is huge miss. BM is a luxury, mental illness and a broken justice system are a disease. My intention was to say that when you see something isn't right it's perfectly reasonable to try to fix it. I'm not saying that my party in the desert lo...

We need to accept that reality exists but we don't need to accept it is unchangeable.
Poverty and homelessness and disease exist and have always existed. I assume you wouldn't tell us to stop trying to solve this things. The slow erosion of what makes Burning Man special can be viewed the same way.

Re: Who is Terbo Ted? Should workers get paid for running camps on the playa?
In years past I never camped in proximity to a P&P camp but this year they were just a couple camps over and it was shocking to experience. The exclusivity, the MOOP, the attitude and the general vibe of "Fuck off, you're not welcome" Last year down the street from us on 5:00 there was a wall of RV...

Who is Terbo Ted? Should workers get paid for running camps on the playa?
Well, reading the Burning Man Journal I came across this: https://journal.burningman.org/2017/09/opinion/shenanigans/hottest-year-ever/ An interesting quote from the post on the page says: "At least these workers were all getting paid. I hope." That suuuuure did anger a few people in the comments. W...

Re: Tips from someone who slept in a car, alone.
However, if you feel like destroying your marriage, go to burning man with your spouse, a single car and no mattress. Buy only one fork. Bring two gallons of water. Arrive with an empty tank. Suggest a 10-some in Orgy Dome. Good job! I'm sure you will learn lots of tips going around ePlaya but you ...

What did you learn this year?
HI EVERYONE! Oh my god! I'm so ready to unplug and head back to the playa. I've enjoyed 5 years of working a very professionally rewarding job that drained my soul. I gave notice at my job a few weeks ago and a few days before the eclipse I'm leaving it!. I learned a lot in the last year. One lesson...

Re: Deep cycle batteries to run kitchen lights
It is really just for lighting a kitchen. Bright and easy to use is better than pretty and colorful. It just needs to work. That said, I've never found little LED spotlights to be as energy efficient as they claim to be. They also tend to break in my experience. Am I just getting the cheapest knock-...

Re: Deep cycle batteries to run kitchen lights
Our camp uses about 40 gallons of gas for 7 days, running our generator about 12 hours per day. I'm tempted to bring another 20 gallons or so to push it into the evening. Most of those hours are during the Burn. I guess I knew this was the answer all along. I'm usually against battery powered stuff....

Re: Deep cycle batteries to run kitchen lights
Thank you! I think that running the generator an extra few hours every night, doing a few extra oil changes, etc.. won't be that bad.
Your advice is appreciated.

Re: Deep cycle batteries to run kitchen lights
Hi Captain Goddammit! Goddammit you are probably right. I'll just set it up with the generator running almost the whole time. We will have a lot of other electrical stuff running anyway (chest freezers and such) so I can justify it that way anyway. I may still hook them up to a single deep cycle and...

Re: Deep cycle batteries to run kitchen lights
We have been using the 5050 white LEDs for the last few years but they break and are really funky.. I'm looking into replacing them with heavy duty rope lights that may survive a few burns. The 5050 strips are so very cheap so we may just go that route again this year. Have you used the rope lights ...

Deep cycle batteries to run kitchen lights
Hi you damn dirty hippies! My camp uses a Honda EU3000is generator to charge batteries, a 12v water pump for our drums, run small gadgets around the camp, etc, but we only run it for a few hours per day. We have a camp private space in a series of Costco barns that get used as a dining room/kitchen/...

...talk about your buzzkill... I love Burning Man and the people there, but one reason I do is that we tend not to sugar coat everything (except bacon, caramelized bacon is awesome). Sustainability is a hot topic. I just don't think it's one we can actually apply to a party in the desert. We can di...

I don't want to be negative or make you think that I'm trolling - but - unless we don't think there is a man made climate change issue -shouldn't we be trying to work out how to do this without fossil fuels. On principal I mean. Isn't this the sort of thing we should be thinking of rather than prop...

What if I made a sauna that got its heat from burning 100% recycled coconut water boxes? I could use lumber from 100% fair trade, organic, gluten free hemp lumber too. Re: Everyone hates a sauna
I didn't mean to imply that you could use a wood stove with propane. Wood burns at about 500 to 1000 degrees while propane in air is 3500 degrees and would probably melt or rupture a wood stove. I'm thinking about getting something designed for propane from a website named after a rainforest and th...

So many great ideas! I sent a message off to the Boston Hive main contact from the website... I'll see what they say. The Finnish stoves look awesome! Maybe I'll make one for home use someday. I often joke that the Port-o-potties at around 2pm are great for couples acro bikram yoga. Not the urinal space but the actual poopers. Everyone hates a sauna
Everyone goes to Burning Man talking about how hot something is and describes it as a sauna. Well kids, I'm going to make a sauna. Our shower setup is always freezing cold so this year I want to make a propane powered sauna for camp. It's going to be about 5 foot by 5 foot and it needs to be propane...

Re: Seeking Tips for group "cooking" on the playa
The dry ice is a great option but it has a few side effects/draw backs: It will carbonate anything you put near it including fruits, berries, and avocados. It shouldn't be stored anyplace you plan to sleep because it is kind'a deadly. It freezes things very very cold and is a little hard to work wit...

Re: Good sound buffer for generators?
I have had good luck with building 4 sided boxes to go all around it except the top and bottom... so it is open to the sky and the ground but enclosed on the sides. Build it about 1-foot taller than the generator and you will 1) not be able to see it from a distance and 2) reduce much of the noise. ...

Just a little update that these Sous-Vide bags make pretty good eggs. I did a small test batch and they tasted pretty good! If you can justify some extra plastic waste by saving on cleaning water/time then this works! Neat!
