Re: Suggestions for Lighting Our Camp Frontage Display

Solar's awesome, but will cost you. Not only for the panel, but for the batteries to hold the charge in the time between when the sun's shining and when it's dark and you need to use the stored energy. Remember, multiply the number of watts times the number of hours you'd like to be using it, and t...

Re: Silly question about charging marine batteries

Just to throw another twist on the recommendations, I do tend to bring twice the battery I need because I only deplete the batteries half-way, I have a cutoff switch that cuts power when they get to 50%. Not depleting them below 50% greatly increases the life of the battery. Also, I sometimes do pai...

As one of the former residents of Camp Bayou, welcome. Too bad I'm not there this year, I'd swing by with some southern hospitality in the form of full custom libations. FWIW it's not hard to find Zydeco musicians on the playa.

I've noticed the latter statistic usually translates to fewer than 100 people who seek treatment specifically for drug or alcohol related health issues. So, yeah--the streets aren't exactly paved with fallen drug-users. :) For all the fine law enforcement help that 100 people supposedly require, co...

Very important to remember that the health department considers ice a food product and it must come from an approved source. At the Burn that would mean bringing it in from Gerlach/Empire or the default, Camp Artica.

A meditation practice helps, it can be loneliness or it can dwelling in the still point of the turning worlds. Alternately, find a mega sound camp and get body to body with some fellow hippies and dance your ass off.

First day, drink lots of water and don't overexert, plan to lounge around and acclimate in someone else's shade. Maybe even go to *gasp* center camp. My first burn back in 1999 was hell on earth the first day as I tried to do and see everything in this wonderful new world I'd found and ignored my bo...

Re: Solar chimney + unpowered swamp cooler

Their argument is that the thermal mass flow rate has to be within a certain range, and as the temperature goes up that range gets narrower and the flow rate increases and that makes it more difficult to control effectively. Too fast and you lose the benefit of evaporative cooling. They are talking...

All the stuff the page you referenced says about evap ponds is true. Evap ponds were all the rage back in the day, but eventually they died out because even though they work, the fact that they work encourages people to just put more stuff in them, until you have either a shallow swimming pool or a ...

Re: Solar chimney + unpowered swamp cooler

It's an interesting idea. I had tried this in a CAD simulation about ten years ago but determined that having enough thermal mass to make it work effectively pretty much obviated it as a practical idea. An alternative that's easier is just a solar powered swamp cooler. There's a few popular designs ...

Frankly, that attitude, on both sides, is the biggest problem we have with law enforcement. The police have a job to do, which is to enforce the laws of the land. But they should first and foremost be friendly and respectful to the population they serve. Respect should be mutual. (That is how I rem...

I so want to say something here, but I don't want anyone reading to jam up the BMORG. Let's just say, the upper echelon of this particular BLM unit definitely has a reputation, and its not too hard to find it out by asking around and filing a few FOIA requests.

The first thing is to make sure you have a piano you aren't too attached to because the potential for damage is great. I strongly recommend that you do not cut down your tarps, if you do, that'll result in a tarp that's more susceptible to tearing under heavy load (as in during really high wind). 20x20 is a walk in the park, just have patience and wait til the wind dies down. Murphy's law says it'll kick up a bit a...
