You're right. It's too easy to get caught up in a single thing that someone says online. I was really responding to Tristan, who seems stuck on seeing his work at Burning Man as a potential business. I think it's great, admirable, and wonderful that you helped build the temple. But I do not think t...

Personally, I do not think it is ok for BM to sell prints, merchandise, etc with the BM logo or representations of art by participants. To me it is a double standard that also goes against the stance of removing commerce from the equation. As far as I know, the money gained from the sales of those ...

No one is forcing anyone to drag a bunch of gear out there and spend hours upon hours taking photos followed by all the time it takes to process them at home. Trying to cover costs for what is essentially a voluntary action is just not cool. Well, I don't see this as quite so clear-cut. As I allude...

The ideas I have been kicking around in my head are still in line with the gift economy. And yes, I also have thousands of dollars in camera equipment that I will gladly bring to the dust bowl. 1. Bring a photo printing setup and give away prints to whoever wants one. Expensive? Most definitely. Re...

One would definitely need to start by reading the Afterburn reports for the Media Team dating back a few years, and probably the press section and our current contracts for the context to understand how we actually deal with the images, when, and why. So if you're serious, perhaps yes, but trust me...

You can expect this answer to evolve slowly, and you can help to craft it with reasonable conversation, or you can shake your fist and be angry that we are trying to oppress you personally... but only one is going to help us move forward. Is there a way for those of us outside the org to be involve...

yeah, the method is probably part of the problem. i want to sell prints cheap using on-line ordering with good but inexpensive companies such as smugmug. the point is to make it easy for people to order prints (with many print size and quality options), to make it easy on me (the process is automat...

Look -- it is never good form to say you speak for others who are not present at a discussion, but: I work with hundreds of photographers every year, many of whom have been supported mightily by Burning Man in their efforts to sell their work - yes, Burning Man images. It's at least 1/4 of what I d...

Tristan, did they have a problem with simply selling prints online thru a service or was it because you didn't have model releases for the people/art in your photographs? I ask because I was considering doing the same thing with the photos I took this year (I was the Temple crew's photographer). In ...

Got a great looking cat there. Take good care of her. I to was amazed at the fore thought of constructing that structure. Thanks y'all for your kind words--it's seriously appreciated. And yes, that's Fredwina -- she was recovering from tail-trimming surgery due to an altercation with a neighborhood...

Temple '09 Photos
Hi all, I was the photographer with this year's temple crew. I've posted photos of the pre-event build on our site as well as shots taken during the event itself. Photos of the hard-working crew are still to come but I didn't want to keep y'all waiting any longer! http://communityartmakers.com Thank...

it seems pretty clear that he ran out of patience when she started asking about adding the Temple as a notch on her artist's bio. as far as my artist's bio goes: it is fine, full, and plump. it does not need to mention Burning Man or Temples. your accusation was entirely unfounded. You may be right...

So did it ever cross your mind that this response was directed at you due to the fact that these guys are in crunch time right now. This is a major project which I'm sure is consuming much of, if not all of the peoples involved time, especially the designer. I'm pretty sure the last thing on his mi...

But the temple builders didn't like your art also as you first told us. I feel like the Temple is this incredible community experience (and the meaning comes from all those people writing things on the Temple and sitting silently in the dust, not from whatever fancy builder gets the honorary assign...

Re: CAMERA CONDOM
For SLR: I'm a pro photographer and the best way I have found to protect gear and still have it be functional is plastic wrap and stretchy tape. Do you mean plain old 'saran wrap'? I was experimenting a few nights ago with the "big ziploc bag" approach and I can't imagine actually shooting with it ...

Hi all, My name's Ira & I'm part of "Community Art Makers", the Austin, TX crew led by Dave Umlas and Marrilee Ratcliffe. As you can imagine, we're very proud to have been chosen to build this year's Temple. Unfortunately, David Best will not be involved with it this year although we're *very* grate...
