This actually reminded me that I need to make a laminated in case of emergency card to wear around my neck. I just wear a collar and tags with my various information (blood type, allergies, license, contact numbers) Sad to say, I'm a statistic. Gashed myself on rebar during teardown (it had been pr...

Anyone ever try these? http://www.backyardgardener.com/gp/Home_Lifestyles/Home_Appliances/HARDWARE-FASTENERS/16_in_Ground_Stake.html I've tried the 16" hard plastic garden stakes. They hold fine ... if you can a) get them in enough, and b) don't destroy them in the process (yes, really...) Find reb...

I slid some 3/4" (I think... whatever fits over these poles...) pvc pipe over the three top extender poles to reinforce them. Just happened to have the pipe, and figured, what the hell. Not a bad idea, as they're fairly lightweight poles, although I personally worry more about where they connect to...

Too bad they've been discontinued. For an off-the-shelf shade structure, they're really fairly good. My thoughts from last year: Nice and solid, but minimal room underneath compared to the footprint they require. They have a 30' diameter, but due to the angle of the sides, you lose almost half of th...

I'm going to answer my own question, incase anyone searches in the future: Kiwi Camp Dry is fairly cheap in 12oz spray cans ($6 or so); don't know the coverage but anecdotal reports are 200-250 square feet/can (that seems high). Testing it on regular fabric has very good results. (watching a ball of...

Solid aluminet or maybe silvicool too are probably the best tarps out there. At the extreme end, single surface gold mirror will reflect almost all heat, when clean. I've used it for electronics. Shows what is possible. ... yes, but you'll cook while you're continually polishing your shade cover......

Why? If it rains long and hard enough to soak your fabric and drip through, then soak whatever you have under your dome ... you got much bigger things to worry about. Because, if it ends up being another Year of the Mud ... I'd rather have at least /one/ place I could retreat to that wasn't totally...

Experience with waterproofing fabric?
Does anyone have experience with waterproofing cotton fabric (ie: using nikwax or starbrite?) Does it work to keep rain out? I've been pondering the idea of covering a dome, and may just use plain old fabric and waterproof it. Heavyweight fabric should be breathable (not get too hot, not catch as mu...

I'm usually barefoot, and I plan on giving it a try on the Playa, but I do have back up shoes/sandals just in case... I'm also going to give my Vibram FiveFingers a try out there! They are the next best thing to being barefoot... well almost :) I've been wondering what I'll be doing this year, too....

Camping with a large tent?
Last year was my first time, and I was part of an existing theme camp. This year, I'm part of a larger group (4-6 people), half of us have been 1 or 2 years, and half haven't. We're planning on sharing a small military surplus tent (16'). We aren't an assigned theme camp (right now, it's enough just...
