Hey, I was a crowd volunteer for those car races, and now that i think of it I bet that was you in the falafel line, crypto. I particularly like the kid-friendliness of this event, really a cool scene. This young lady was killing it in the velodrome for example: http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m7...

That mp3 that cowbowangel posted is excellent, thanks for posting it. I didn't know Jim, but I did stop by that camp during a big fish fry one year. My condolences.

Re: Bizarre LEO experience/observation..
Riding my bike approx 7:00 and H, I turn corner to find a Pershing County Sheriff vehicle in middle of road, seemingly unattended, doors open. Uh oh, someone in trouble, getting busted, someone hurt? Surprisingly, I hear widespread laughter all around me. I look next to the LEO vehicle, and see one ...

Re: Review: The People of Burning Man
I bumped into Julian at Empire Store and got his book. It's great, especially if you are a sucker for the well-utilized wide-angle. The images are intimate, the graphic design is cool, the tone unabashedly optimistic and inclusive. Crisp, bright, smiley. Thank you Julian Cash! While we're at it, got...

There are no Space Police I'd disagree. The Placement crew qualify as the space police, or at least the space rangers. I was drawn into many incidents that involved folks being relocated by Placers, after they had started set up of their camp. ...what you ask for, what you are told, and what happen...

What the fuck can you do to an open trailer to spend $1000 on it? What the fuck I did, was destroy the axle, wheels, hubs, spindles, etc, then repeat. It has still cost less to repair, than to buy a quality new one ($1500+). The first time the trailer broke, on the way to BRC, we limped into Elko w...

Some anecdotal info that may or may not be relevant to those considering purchase vs rental: Over past 5 years I've done about 5000 total miles hauling a campmate's 5'x8' (or 6'x10' ?) open trailer to and from the playa. It has been loaded to (or beyond) its capacity with group gear each time. It's ...

These are the artists who most most changed my life: Bill Peet when I was 5 years old (1st visions of dystopian future) George Lucas when I was 8 Ed Emberley when I was 9 (for the way his drawing style allows catagorizing and analysis of time and space) Ray and Charles Eames when I was 10 (for "Powe...

Re: Anchors for the Man?
Here's what the Heavy Machine folks typically use for anchors: Are these the same anchors used for the Man & things like the Temple? I haven't specifically checked out the screw-in anchors used at the Man - they may be larger. I seem to recall seeing larger eyes on the screw-in anchors for a tall a...

Nitevenus, there actually is a small crew called "Eyes on Art" that operates under the auspices of the Artery. Eyes on Art concerns itself with keeping art safe at night. Mostly this is about cruising around at night and making sure the art is properly lit so people can see it and don't smash into i...

I love listening to "spiritual entertainers." Big props and much respect to Alan Watts. He is great at breaking down and repackaging eastern worldviews and concepts for western-reared brains such as mine. Listening to him has significantly informed the way I look at the life, the world, reality, all...

I am listening to the group Das Racist. They have high "love em or hate um" factor. I love them. My two favorite releases of 2010 are their 2 free mixtapes: "Shut Up, Dude" and "Sit Down, Man." Also recently been listening to BMIR online, until one of their mp3s starts skipping for an hour. Also rec...

Be advised that if you want DPW/Heavy Machine to drive your screw anchor, their anchor driver attachments accept a 1/2 inch wide eye. I'm not sure if 5/8" would fit. I brought some anchors w/ 3/4" wide eyes and they did not fit the anchor driver. Here's what the Heavy Machine folks typically use for...

From what I've heard, some DPW cleanup folks get a check, but it works out to minimum wage or less. I don't think anyDPWbody is getting rich out there on the playa. As the last one to leave my camp this year, I dealt with a few hundred pounds of stuff (gear, food waste, lumber, clean water, graywate...
