Re: Bike Builders Unite
Last year I got regular Schwinn, 26" wheeled, trikes. I put front hub 1000watt, 48volt motors on them, with lith-ion batteries, lit them up with lots of EL wire, good head and tail lights and they were great. Big basket built in on the back and added a basket to the handlebars. I didn't want for mor...

Re: Hope to Marry at BM
Last year we went down to BRD to see the Persieds meter shower, a couple weeks before BM. We then drove to Lovelock, the county seat, and got our license. My friend Ponder got his Universal Life Church ministers license and we got married at the Temple of Juno on Wednesday, at Sundown. I got my mini...

Re: staking down a Sibley 500
I'd do what BB said. Overkill is still kill.
I use 18" rebar with a 90*, 1 1/4" bend. Easier to pound with my 3# hammer and I drive them into the playa. Nothing to step on. Vicegrip twist and pull for removal.
Better than the tent-as-tumbleweed effect...

Re: BURNING MAN is going to be COLD
Yep. I use a 20* double bag and I'm always comfortable. It not sleeping that's cold, for me, it's the time between sundown and that comfy bed, that can be a bitch. Good fleece, a windbreaker, long underwear - silk or polypropylene, yes even wool blends - Uggs work well. Layers, not made out of cotto...

Re: Solar / Battery Power for Art Project
My power consumption is going up, so adding another panel. And while it's not good for battery life to run below 50%, I typically run below. It's better for me not to have even more batteries - so, since I only use this setup 2 or 3 times a year, I use em down. And I've used the pair of 6volt golf c...

There were floods in Reno last fall. Does not translate into a wet winter. 200 miles north in the High Desert we've had some rain recently.
I'll be down for Rendezvous over Memorial Day. Should be snow in the mountains to the west - usually.
Wasn't last year.

Re: Temporary hair (mustashe) color??
My beard has turned white. I grow it out a bit before BM and dye it purple - but I use permanent color. Then, I trim it or cut it after.
With permanent dye, you don't want to dye your face, too, so... don't do that.
Use permanent. And cut it after, if you must...

You need a bike. And, yeah, a beach cruiser. I got two, a matching pair for $40 each. Got 4 years out of them. 2 1/8" tires work great. I've got a trike now, getting another and putting an electric motor on both of them - 'cause I'm old. At least get a mountain bike. You don't need the gears - there...

10-4 on the North Pole. Had mine 3 years - granted, not kick-ass bad years, but it does seem to be stable on the playa. I use 18", 90* bent-on-top rebar. Have had it out for other things in BRD, but BM seems to have the potential for the most wind. Used it out there in May, June & July and BM has th...

Maladroits probably right, you're likely not to be all that hungry, but not everyone reacts that way, you may be ravenous. As well documented here, protect your food with double/triple bags from cooler water, because your cooler stays cold better with the water in it than draining it off, just insur...

edbrez, I, too, bring fresh things and use my cooler to keep them so. But be sure to have a back up. Bring enough canned or boxed things, just in case. Shit happens. For example, I have kept milk all week. But it was for White Russians, not essential for my survival. Shelf stable milk, that needs no...

Now that it's been raining on the playa we may be in for some better conditions. That said, it'll probably be the dustiest year ever. Have seen 'em roll like tumbleweeds, one from our camp a couple years ago. When we got it back we zip-tied PVC to it profusely and dropped to about 4'. Also staked it and guyed it. Don't remember if it was those things or maybe no more big wind that allowed it to survive the week. Haven't had anothe...
