Re: Travelling by plane and other first time questions!

why is everyone posting rides here?
there's a ride board, it has to be more efficient to search that than scroll through this. i know it was dysfunctional for a bit, but it is supposed to be working now.

no problem. its really simple, its more complicated in words than a simple picture. first if you are thinking of making a pvc dome, which if you like building stuff you should consider, here's the basic design i am going for http://www.alternativeengineering.com/DomePage/DomePortfolio/DomePVC/DomePV...

Re: Shade structure
What I thought would work would be to tie rope from top one PVC pole to the next. Like a clothes line. Then tie my Tarp over the "clothes line". One for the roof and one for the side facing the morning sun. hmm. the side panel is going to take a beating in the wind. will you leave it up during the ...

so if i understand this, you want 4 pvc posts, two tarps somehow joined, and then you will secure the posts into the playa? sounds fine. you will need guy wires/lines to hold the posts up, at least two per post, maybe three. i am not clear on how you plan to attach the tarps to the clothes line, but...

it is hard to imagine grommets in sheets holding up to much shear and tension. even if you reinforced them, sheets or anything like them get their strength from not having holes in them. the winds can be really fierce, so fierce people cut holes in their dome coverings to spoil the wind so as not to...

i am a acrobatic pilot flying into BM. do you want postive or negative G's? (that's essentially the answer the question above).
....exactly why do you want to throw up all over someone's plane?

look in digikey
bellboy is right. you need a voltage regulator. if you go to www.digikey.com you can find everything, including data and spec sheets on all the parts which usually have a wiring diagram. if you look for voltage regualtors, you can sort by voltage and current. they should cost about 50 cents to a dol...

i second that
my first year I brought a video camera and a digital still. i never took the video camera out of the bag, and I was so caught up in the moment, I took very few still pictures, relatively speaking. in fact most of my pictures are when I was board and there was nothing to see or do. I have a lot of du...

from your description it is not clear if the fans are drawing air into the tupperware or blowing it out or just across the vents. either way, computers, especially laptops need air not to over heat. since the air is already so damn hot, they need a lot of air. your basic idea is good: an airtight bo...

I have purchased from www.azsolar.com before, I think their prices are competitive. solar is great for all the obvious reasons, but it is expensive, and if you are running stuff at night, you will need a set of batteries and some calculations for how much when and where. you say you will be running ...

avoid the screw type stakes
I tried those screw type stakes last year. of the three one went in great, one didn't go in at all, and the third, well is sort of worked. the playa is weird in that some areas are hard like concrete and some are like packed sand. depeneding on where you are, the screws may or may not go in. A 2ft l...

The airport isn't being set up yet. Read the permit. I think the people who set it up have already been out there for initial survery stuff. i try for a balance between good and easy, when it comes to food.
tastybites from trader joes or www.tastybites.com are awesome, very easy to make (they boil in their own pouch) and tasty. they're warm so they are better suited to dinner than lunch. but when it is so hot, I don't eat much anyway.

sad to say, some people who are setting up the airport told me there was no rain this winter, and as a result, the playa is very very soft, like 2001. I expect there to be mucho dust.

I'm still confused on this aspect, considering previous years where guns were alloved and the current state of the festival now. some people lock their most valubles in their car, but if its any comfort, I had a camp on the esplanade that had people wandering in and out 24 hours a day and nothing disappeared.

now that we are taling about wire sizes and and their lengths, I would like to suggest that people over-engineer the size of their wires. unless the wire is made for high temp applications, in which case it will say high-temp on it, it is assumed to be used under normal conditions. when the wire is ...

I found rebar in my socal home depot in 1,2,3 ft lengths. I don't think more than 2 ft is necessary. also, bending it into a candycane is cool, but I made a big mistake my first time. mostly correct
you are all mostly correct. in the absence of an external electric field all charge will move to the surface of a conductor. so this means if you charge up something and then take away battery it is all on the surface. however, a DC current will produce a steady flow through the conductor (wire). wh...

I used gmrs radios and they definitely had less chatter than the FRS radios. since the price of GMRS radios are now basically on par with FRS, there may be more chatter this year. While the CB radio bands are basically worthless because of mindless chatter in the city, maybe out on the playa they wi...
