Re: work in Sacramento - live there or commute from Bay Area
I just moved to Sacramento from Reno. There is quite a bit of partying to be had here and plenty to do, not the scene I'm used to (in Reno) but I'm still getting settled in here. SF is only a train or car trip away so you can still make trips there a lot. I'd say it'd be worth it to get your feet on...

Re: Need tips building a 30 ft wooden octogon
don't forget to be prepared for wind during construction too. we had some damn crazy winds building this year! we lost many sheets of ply and they caused much damage, and these were all nailed down as is typical. That was one hell of a night and luckly it was pretty much only us and the man/temple c...

Re: Need tips building a 30 ft wooden octogon
Anyhow, I don't see how the internal "guying" you're visualizing requires a cable all the way up to the top. If each level has adequate shear strength and is well-attached to the next, eg similar to a multi-story stud frame building, you'd attach anchors to posts close to the base, similar to seism...

Re: Need tips building a 30 ft wooden octogon
In mentioning the metal, I am reminding you to bring a magnetic rake. It makes life much easier when you want to get the heck out of dodge. The internal guying is simply a cable that runs from the top of the structure to a anchor in the ground (with a turnbuckle). Basically it holds the structure st...

Re: Need tips building a 30 ft wooden octogon
Note Bob YOU didn't install or raise any of that, you just used slave labor as your machine. and we are talking about internal guying which is much better ascetically, in this case, resulting in a higher pull out force, than external guying. Now I haven't run the calcs for this structure so I don't ...

Re: Need tips building a 30 ft wooden octogon
I guess you could buy, install and remove earth anchors by hand, but WHY? We have always used the ones from the artery and they have nice equipment to make it happen in minutes (and they remove them). You could also instead of using a truck transport all your pieces by bicycle, sometimes self relian...

Re: Need tips building a 30 ft wooden octogon
well the short version (short on time) is that cables are run from the top of the stucture (usually at the corners) down to earth anchors that are driven into the playa. We've used this method on several structures, most recently on Burn Wall Street. The earth anchors are augers that can be driven b...

Re: Need tips building a 30 ft wooden octogon
Glad to see your enthusiasm and progress. I agree that your structure appears to need some guying, but don't worry you don't have to have gaudy cables on the outside. Internal guying is sturdy and well hidden, yet provides the necessary down force to counteract wind and burner forces (yes people WIL...

Using this thread to ask a question; if an undercover at BM asks me what I'm on, and I tell him, what are the chances of a ruined night? How deep undercover will they go? Re: Propane-Powered Vehicles
I looked into this for my willys jeep a while back. Lots of info on the pros and cons on the net if you search, especially 4x4 sites. People do it for rock crawlers so the carb won't be starved at extreme angles. There is a slight loss of power when compared to petro, but not huge. And your exhaust ...
