Re: Food/Drink: What worked - what didnt
Since I'm making my menu and shopping list right now I thought I'd add to this. Last burn (2014) we really found our groove with food. Meals were all made or bought in advance then vacuum sealed (best purchase!). I'm definitely one who doesn't want to go to much effort out there, but I'm also not wi...

Re: DIY shade cloth edging
Ah okay, I assumed I'd just be sewing into the binding material - which would be non-stretch, so a non-stretch stitch would be fine - with the shade cloth would be sandwiched in (like a quilt binding). But regardless it sounds like the improved clip method is a good solution and far less work. Thank...

DIY shade cloth edging
BF and I are able to attend with a friend somewhat last-minute and are scrambling to get ready. Because we absolutely cannot help ourselves, we're determined to update our shade structure in the little time we have. Currently it's a 20x30 flat top conduit + silver tarp ceiling/walls maneuver (about ...

Re: Exodus 2011
There's an arena in Washington that holds tens of thousands, and is in the sticks. Two-lane road for many miles before any major freeway. I've only been there once, but it was for a sold-out Radiohead show. At least as many vehicles were attempting to leave that amphitheater at exactly the same tim...

Re: Exodus 2011
Exodus was an unfortunate end to a great week for us. Admittedly we left at a bad time (12:30pm Monday) but we were prepared for about 5 hours. A nearby Ranger quoted that time as were hopping in the car. The line wasn't even into the city at that point, but we still spent 9 hours waiting. We had so...

Re: One Item for BM a Day
Installed Sirus Radio in the trailer, must have music. Deep Fried and deboned 20 lb turkey for camp dinner at home rather than having the mess on the Playa. Fried 6lbs of bacon. Working on DP camp bike racks tomorrow. Much is working on costumes. Collected a palet of body paint and brushes. Dry run...

Re: One Item for BM a Day
Today I fiiiinally dug through my giant trash bag of clothing from last year. Sorted through it, washed a few items (yes yes, never got around to it...) but the majority won't be going back. Lots of stuff that doesn't fit or I thought would work and doesn't. Kinda bummed, I've got a lot fewer thing...

Re: One Item for BM a Day
Today I picked up some Celluclay and wire mesh for a mutant trike sculpture Skyote - what is Celluclay? We just got a new used trike off Craigslist and we're brainstorming ideas on how to decorate it. Celluclay is basically papier mache, but it's sort of powdery, then when mixed with water acts lik...

Re: One Item for BM a Day
And this must count: BF served me a fab cocktail. We're testing recipes (insofar as he's making them and I'm drinking them) to decide which he will have ready to go in the dust. Dirty job and all that. wow poor baby hehe. Oh indeed, he makes things rough for me. He wanted to handle the shade struct...

Re: looking for advise on hair dye
Adding another rec for Special Effects. The red and pink tones stick around for ages. I've had my hair atomic pink with purple accents for about 1 1/2 years and it fades beautifully -just gets slightly paler but more "neon". And it's safe to leave in your hair for hours, even overnight. You can put ...

Joining in on this thread, though of course at this point it's many things per day... Today I picked up some Celluclay and wire mesh for a mutant trike sculpture, while the bf spent several hours removing 2 years of rust from said trike. Then I tackled some el wire research so I can order from Seatt...

I'm in need of some advise for dye-ing and old vest I have. I was looking on Ebay at some Rit Dye, but thought I'd ask a few questions here first. Ah, yeah, I'd def not pay much more than $100 for one of those. That is a super basic design and materials, pret a port - an advantage to getting one handmade, say from at Etsy person, is that it will be of course measured to fit you. None of them will be very hard to clean. Short torso v. long tor...

I really didn't have any issues, washing anything, as far as playa dust. Oh good! This will be my second year, and in '07 I didn't bring anything nice, just lightweight cotton shirts and skirts and random thrift-store stuff...and most of the cheap costumey things were never washed  heh. But ...

Yep, silk or satin. The site I'm looking at has a variety of both--haven't decided which I'm going for yet. And all are lined with two layers of cotton twill, so hopefully sweat stains won't be an issue. There is info online about hand washing silk and satin, but I didn't know if there was anything ...

Playa corset care tips?
I'm thinking about ordering my first corset, but the company says all their corsets are dry clean only. Does anyone have experience with dry cleaning playa dust out of more delicate materials? Also, sweat isn't an issue for me in loose clothes because it's so dry, but what about in something this cl...

You need to rest sometime, can't go nonstop for a week without crashing. :) It's important to listen to what your body is telling you to do, and not overdo it. If the heat is getting you down, you can stick your feet in an icewater bath. I guarantee that'll cool you off FAST. :D I also found that c...

1. Hit the sauna for a couple of weeks before you go "home". Hey, my bf's fancy gym has a sauna, that's a great idea! Also, when it comes to electrolytes, people generally get enough sodium but not enough potassium and calcium. One thing that helps is a product called Lite Salt from Morton or you can make your own. It is 1/2 regular sodium chloride table salt and 1/2 potassium chloride "salt substitute". You can g...

Okay, sounds like my experience wasn't too abnormal then. But reading this advice, I bet sleep was as much a culprit as the heat! Staying energized during the day?
This will be my second year at BM, my first was in 2007. I tried to mentally prepare for the heat, so I wasn't shocked when I arrived that it was so damn hot. Unfortunately, that did nothing to physically prepare me for the unbelievable energy-sapping powers of the heat. I really feel like I missed ...
