The short answer is: No, not really The long answer: In order to make a strong structure you need the ends of the conduit to end up at the same spot. By the time you stack 6 pieces of 3/4” conduit with the proper angles it will be over 8” thick from the top piece to the bottom one. All the “correct”...

A man flying in a hot air balloon realizes he is lost. He reduces his altitude and spots a man in a field down below. He lowers the balloon further and shouts, "Excuse me, can you tell me where I am?" The man below says, "Yes, you're in a hot air balloon, about 30 feet above this field." "You must b...

What about cheap bed sheets from thrift stores? I'm contemplating using them. That is what we used last year. You don’t even have to go to a thrift store. We told a hotel that we needed them for our church group, they filled a friend's hearse to capacity for us. (we never told them *what* church) A...

Sure looks like it would do the trick and then some. Wouldn't it be a little slow though? Looks like you have to pump the handle several times to squash one end. You would only need to pump 2-3 times depending on the bottle jack. Plus with the added power you could make a die-plate that can press t...

Blame it on the asian building boom. Conduit prices have skyrocketed over the last two years. Of course, A few years before we shut down all the U.S. steel mills because it was cheaper to ship it from China. As I understand it, China needed all the steel because they took on the three world’s large...

PVC Dome
Tony, I’m going to be building a dome out of PVC this summer. I’d rather use conduit but I was given a metric butt ton of 1” PVC. So I plan to use that for my elliptical dome. The way I’m planning to do the connections is as followed. Keep in mind I’ve never done one like this before but I have hear...

Diesel today in Portland OR was at $2.80 a gallon. I would not be surprised to see the cheap gas hit $3.00 this summer.
------
I thought I’d look before I posted,
There are already gas prices over $3.00

Last year we got there around 12:30am. We spent about 40 minutes in traffic to get through the gates. We were tired before but we were wide awake once BRC was in site. We didn’t have a problem finding a spot to camp, (8:45 and Mars) We had a 4 block radius that we told friends we would be at, They d...

If it is only 12-14’ long just get some people under it. We lifted two 20’ towers with 6 people last year. The towers were made of 4” angle iron and weighed about 200lbs. Not as heavy as a telephone pole, but with your shorter length you should be fine. Try it out before you get too into the lift id...

Other than the extra work and material, I think you have a great idea. Good thing it is a labor of love. If you had access to a welder you could assemble it then weld any intersections you didn’t want to take apart. I would leave any struts that connect one panel to another loose, but all the joints...

Lemon you're right. I think there was some diameter/radius confusion going on. 314 sq feet is about the size of a double car garage. Last year we built a 30 foot Diameter dome and it was very nice for our 8 people. Don’t be discouraged build as big as you want. It is also Fun to build a model first....

Outside of the 8 of us camping together, I knew one other person that was going to Burning Man. I didn’t know where she would be, and I meant to look her up after we had gotten settled. We hadn't talked for a few months other than we were both going. We got in late Monday morning. When the sun rose,...

DragonFly, I was deeply offended by your comments. Domes are not Out-dates. I like the drilling and fastening.... And if you are like Robotland when you want a bigger one you simply build it under your old one. In a few years he’ll have a 200 foot radius 20 level dome. It will look more like a cone ...

With the current division I have, the longest strut would be just over 5’ and the shortest would be around 3.5’. I want to play around with my method of division and try to get the strut lengths closer together. Sometimes I get into it and after a little while I go crazy, so I need to take breaks. I...

I was gifted about 300 feet of 1.25” PVC pipe last year. So I figure I should use it for something. Unless plans change I think I’m going to do a smaller (8’ radius) elliptical dome, with an eccentricity around 1.5-2. So the roof should be 12 to 16 feet tall. The frequency will be 3 or 4. Octahedron...

I think this is a wonderful Idea. I think it should include all unique shade structures, not just domes. What Zulegonna said is good. It will help to find other Burners to talk to before you get there. My guess on your cost, not counting your ticket price, would be $400 to $1500. You might be able to do it for less but don’t count on it. There is a 3000 mile drive that will take 3 days minimum. If you ...

New Avatar
I just made a new avatar, ironically it is my baby workshop mascot who is named CapLocs (no “k”). His left eye was made out of the Cap Locks key that was ripped out of my keyboard after one too many accidental engagements. In my opinion the key is the most pointless key on the keyboard. It was carri...

Typically when does the main Burning Man web page get updated? I know pics are up and all that, but the front page still list last years date. Pictures of the Man
I’m making a huge sticker for the top of my Laptop. I was hoping to use some of the pics I took this year but after going through them a number of times I can’t find one clear pic of the Man. If you have a large high resolution image of the man during the day/night/sunrise/sunset I would be grateful...

I don’t care for the party barges unless they are done really well (draka). The weakest one I've seen was the framed up platform made to fit in the back of a Hertz rental pick up truck. They had plywood horses on the front of the truck with the “illusion” that they were pulling the platform. This wo...

I once had about 100’ of rope in my carryon. I needed it to tie down stuff while moving. The guy thought it was something kinky and put on rubber gloves to handle it, then he made a comment “looks like someone has been having some fun”. All I said was “Excuse me?” and the asshole attitude came out. ...
