Re: Medications on the playa...
i have a pill organizer that i use 24/7 in defaultia. when traveling to & from the burn, i keep that same organizer together with all of my actual pill bottles in a giant ziplock bag in my backpack on my passenger seat. they're easy for me to access and easy for me to show if LEOs want a look. once ...

Re: Dry heat vs humidity...
i grew up in the michigan, moved to phoenix over a decade ago. i've visited florida a few times and have now been to the playa 4 times. i can say WIHTOUT A DOUBT that i prefer the dry heat. florida in july is my idea of hell. the humidity is stifling and suffocating. it’s like walking around with a ...

i can't pick a single item! i have developed my perfect daytime uniform of cowboy hat, bra, bikini bottoms, cargo belt, camelback, and knee high combat boots. all black, of course. i would seriously fucking cry if i lost the hat, belt, or boots.

Re: Lag screws vs everything else...
i don't have power tools to bring and i wasn't going to buy 'em just for the occasion. when you live and burn as small as i do, every space-devouring single-use item purchase matters. i'm still young and spry enough to bang and pull 6 bolts. AND 6 bolts take up way less space than 6 rebars. even if ...

Re: Lag screws vs everything else...
would it be a total fucking disaster if i used 12" bolts? i've got a 12x12 shade structure and i'm planning to put 2 at each corner (plus 4 - 8 regular tent stakes at the base of my structure that go through loops in the canopy cover.) i can hardly justify spending $50 - $80 on 8 14" bolts, let alo...

Re: Playa Bike Locks (Is there a better solution?)
I have a standard bike lock (the coiled plastic covered cable thingy) and wear the key around my neck on double chains at all times. ALL TIMES. (it's also got the keys for the padlock on my basket.) I wrap it through the spokes and around the frame and lock it. easy peasy.

I don't leave camp (except to use the porto) without my hat, goggles, dust mask, camelback, and cargo belt. essential items in/on my belt: cup, spork, flashlight, glucose packet, TP & ziplock bag, lip balm, hand lotion, sharpies, and my burner notebook containing a copy of my ID & insurance cards, m...

I have literally (LITERALLY!) eaten at least one salad every single day since I've been back. iceberg wedges preferably, though I'll take what I can get when I'm away from home.

bling as in necklaces? I am a magpie and wear it all until I get back. then they go in the jewelry box with all of my other precious shinies. I can't really say anything didn't work. my main goal was to use my cooler as little as possible and it totes worked. eggbeaters, pre cooked bacon, tortillas, and hotdogs were the only things that had to be kept cold. I bought small enough packages of everything else that only occasionally a jar wou...

my little stove was FUCKING AMAZING! i could boil water in about 5 minutes. i destroyed my ramen and mac & cheese allotments post haste. anything out of a can was heated through in a few minutes: ravioli, spaghettiOs, chunky soups. I was also able to make eggs & bacon for breakie and hotdogs & veggi...

this was definitely my darkest, scariest, most brutal burn so far. being totally solo (drove alone, camped alone, no volunteering) sounded like it would be "WHEEEEEE I CAN DO WHATEVER I WANT!!!" and turned out to be "I hate long drives and left completely to my own devices I become a downward spiral...

in 2013 i found a little industrial dive bar called SuckieFuckaye. dunno if they'll be there this year but i'm keeping my fingers crossed. they had a squeetastic playlist. Planet Earth is my go-to but they stick with 80s/90s dark/synth/ebm. not so much with the industrial. like, you'll hear Icon of ...

it's really not gonna provide much shade except for on the very top of your tent at high noon. that thing's gonna start heating like an oven as soon as the sun rises and hits one of those exposed sides.

Ignore the snarkers. There are lots of good options if you just know where to look: - The good folks over at Thunderdome often take-in strays. You might look them up. - The BRC Department of Public Works (DPW) is also famous for having a soft heart. Lots of room over there and they may not even cha...

Re: First-timer, coming in Thursday solo
you'll definitely want shade. even if it's just one of those beach shade canopy thingies that look kinda like a half tent. being in an unshaded tent is fucking awful. especially since disco naps are pretty much a requirement to be able to enjoy both day and night life on the playa.

Re: First-timer, coming in Thursday solo
good shade is more important than your tent. i have a teensy weensy kids' tent that i bought for $20. it's just big enough to sleep in. it's the awesome shade structure that it's under that makes my life on the playa work. i'd suggest getting 2 teensy tents, one for sleeping and one for your stuff, ...

feel free to categorize me as a bourgie space hogging American princess because that sort of shared close quarters is truly the stuff of nightmares for me. i did a ride share of 3 people in a six person RV and i'm VERY surprised that one or two bodies were not buried in the desert between reno and p...

Re: Seeking tips for taming long hair on the playa
i've got long, platinum blonde hair. all i do to take care of it is keep it braided (low pigtails braided and then coiled up and pinned into buns at the nape of my neck) and keep it covered (i always wear a hat or scarf). i even sleep with the braids in, but uncoiled, only taking it down to comb it ...

that this is not "camping + costumes". yes, you live in a tent. yes, you get to dress up. but... all of my previous camping experience was about the simple joy of building a camp & a fire & lazing about & cooking under the stars & generally slowing down every day tasks because you have aaaaaall the ...
