Re: Mirrored Art Projects vs. Open Playa

Never got around to the maze, but we've got a mirror mandala made of over fifty convex security mirrors. It's easy enough to just dust it every night as part of our opening routine.

I haven't heard anything about fire tools being confiscated during air travel. I'd just make sure to check them and not try to carry them on.

What it really boils down to is the fact that it's Burning Man and you're going to want to spin fire.

Re: Great!

Color me stopping by as well. I'll be bringing glow and fire poi and had hoped to find folks to spin with and share technique. Prometheatrics added to my Book of Must Visits. How about... a mouse?? :) That actually could work if I can't find a better solution. It comes with its own problems, but most of the obvious ones have equally obvious lines to workarounds. It'd be cool it if were a big lit red button, but I can quite easily surround it with a ring of red leds inst...

Aside from the concept of pausing, I'd suggest looking for software that provides image capture or snapshot capabilities, since that's what you're going to be showing on your screen. The button press triggers capturing a still image from a frame. I'm going to be using an old notebook with Windows X...

USB Button & Webcam Mirror

I need a solidly built, illuminated USB button that, when pressed, yields a definable keypress to the computer to which it is connected. I also need some free webcam software that allows you to enable a mirror mode which can be paused and unpaused by hitting a key.

When you use a technical abbreviation like UI it suggests that you already have technical details sorted out. You need a button of some sort to send a signal to the computer. That's pretty much the idea. It's back projected onto a sheet of plexiglass over which paper has been pulled.

What I don't have a clear line on is the software and the physical UI.

I suspect you'll get more and better answers with a description of your project rather than the specifics you think you're looking for. The hivemind works best on big pictures, not details. This is a project I've been working on versions of for years now, and I'm fairly confident I've got the rest ...

While the answer of 'throw a piece of rebar in a random direction and you'll hit one' is definitely true, my camp makes a point of burning every night at dark thirty (or dark forty-five) and we often have a crew out burning as the sun rises. We're generally placed on the Esplanade and can be most ea...

Art Transpo: Trucks, Containers & Trailers, Oh My!

Our camp has an art installation (specifically, the Tesseract mirror-bungee hypercube) that has needed either a cube truck rented or a trailer pulled behind a camp member with a large enough vehicle- a luxury we don't always have. A third alternative has occurred to me this year, namely the possibil...

These are exactly the sort of replies I count on the eplaya to yield. Thanks, both of you. I love it when it's a matter of choosing between solutions what'll do the trick. At this point I'm leaning towards the second 2k due to cost, noise and fault tolerance- if one goes out I still have one. I'll p...

Thanks for the tip- I'll be sure to look into the 3000iSA. It might just be worth the expense. The light I'm referring to isn't so much a disco mirror-ball as it is a dual-axis light projector. That said, I'm already considering how to protect it- from as simple as a plexiglass terrarium to some dif...

Staying Lit from Dusk to Dawn

Some lighting and power questions for the beloved hive mind. I recently ordered a Chauvet Cosmos 2 for the camp and note that it's got two 300W bulbs in it, plus the motor. I've got a Honda 2ki that generally runs all we need at night- we're not a high-power sound camp, really. I don't want to get s...

3D Zoetrope Strobing

I know many of us look back with fond memories on the swimmers, divers and monkeys- those magical three dimensional zoetropes that flickered in the night. Inspired by that work, I've an idea for a smaller, in-camp zoetrope. I'm looking for links or ideas on how to get the timing of the strobe right....

LEDs with Resistors on Short Notice

I received a package of LEDs from a company whose web site led me to believe that they'd include the resistors already attached. Now I'm a good number of LEDs short, don't have the time to add resistors and am hoping for a suggestion from the hivemind. Does anyone know of a company that sells white ...

Thanks! That's almost exactly what I was picturing, except I was picturing using the spin for gyro effects, too. Which would probably make it much more difficult.

And looking at that log, it doesn't look easy. Thanks for the link! Now I have someone to bother with questions once I've read it all.

Flashpaper Origami Workshop

This is one of those "Oh Cool!" ideas I've had for years but have not yet made real. I hope to this year, but it occurs to me that flashpaper might not be legal on the playa, with the ban on fireworks & the like. Does anyone know if a flashpaper origami workshop would get shut down by the law? Quida...

I'm designing a fountain for our camp this year, ludicrous as it might sound. I'd like to hear from anyone who's done work with them at the event before. I'm considering renting a cargo van for the event- anyone out there find something better than $300/wk? Preferably from a company who doesn't care where you take it, just that it comes back clean.
