FYI - Kanuckistan is only one camp of AB folks, so use the links Aviax posted. I highly suggest any burners attend the regional burn in June to meet other burners and network. I know several people that have made connections in the past that resulted in shared rides and plans from this event. Good l...

i dont see what the big deal is with telling people where you are going. it's none of their business! maybe with the smaller mom and pop rental companies but when i deal with Thrifty to rent my van they never ask me where i'm going nor do i tell them. just make sure you clean it thoroughly (i pay t...

Tix for Freezer Burn go on sale April 1. It's a nice way to meet other AB burners. If you're on facebook, the group name is "Alberta Regional Burning Man )*(". Freezer Burn will be on the weekend of June 11/12/13 about 40 minutes east of Red Deer. I know several friends who were able to meet other f...

I'd suggest thinking about: what can you really live on for a week? Like boxed pasta and canned goods you can get on sale and stock up. I'm not saying eating KD for a week would be ideal, but it would be cheap and wouldn't rot. It would also allow you to bring a smaller cooler (transportation space ...

I love Repo! Most people haven't heard of it because it was VERY limited release. In many cases, only at a small indy theatre for a week in most cities. It actually didn't even come to Calgary. I was in AZ and happened to catch it the last day I was there in January, and just got the Blu-Ray. Really...

I've been going to the Burn from Calgary since 2004. I've never had a problem. There are a few key items to note to make your life easier: 1. Tell them you are going camping. This is not a lie, but also does not arouse suspicion. 2. Purchase your tickets with will call delivery. A quick stop on the ...

I think that it may be an "or" event rather than an "and" event. ;) It depends - in 09 the events are a week farther apart than usual. If one can take that much time off work, it almost worth turning it into a month-long journey. It's easier for me with more recovery time between the 2 events, but ...

I did the opposite - 1st burn solo and 2nd burn w theme camp. I preferred the theme camp, personally, but there is something to said for being able to say you did it alone ;) PP is right - downer to dismantle by yourself. But with a theme camp there is more to dismantle... i guess misery DOES love c...

holy old thread batman!
I'm in Calgary, and this will be my third burn. Me and my fiance make it just our SUV, and yes, the trek is lenghty! Are you on the Shambhala board? It may not be your thing, but there is a handful of Sham-burners on there. You should surf and check it out. We do have veteran friends in Edmonton, bu...

My first burn was 04. My bf and I went completely alone. We tried to go with a theme camp, but they were only going to allot us 10x10ft, and we were camping in a costco carport, so it didn't work out. We didn't know this until about 1 week before leaving. So we were totally over-prepared, and made i...

I don't have kids yet, but we're hoping to in the near future. I was concerned about my BM future as I do live in Canada, and the trek itself is quite a trial with just 2 adults. I was mentioning this to my mom, and her response was "That's what grandparents are for!" My mom rocks! **I'm not critici...

The island thing
What is it about Newfoundland? (NL) My 2 favourite stories: 1. A family travelling in NL had their passports and wallets stolen. A plea was sent out on the news as they would be unable to return home on their flight as scheduled without passports and other identification. Their items were turned int...

No - there is no cod kissing anymore. Since the fisheries are all closed now (there is no cod), you must kiss a Puffin's a$$. We usually bring a toy plushy puffin. (FYI - a puffin is a bird) You also need to eat a piece of bologna, wear a sou'wester (hat), do a few jig steps, and say a newfie saying...

I'm not in a NL camp, but I am a Newfoundlander. I currently am in Calgary and will be making the trek this year, however, bringing the "screech in" essentials across the border is tough considering it would include meat (not allowed)... unless you know somewhere in the US one can purchase a Maple L...

I get asthma related to animals, pollens, dust, and over exertion. I didn't need industrial strength masks or specialized stuff, and I didn't even use my inhaler. I did, however, use the disposable dustmasks one level up from the run of the mill - it had a little one way valve on the end to allow fo...
