Cindy Earlier today I arranged a ride with one of my camp mates. Thank the gods, because my money is running thin. Even though we wont be driving to the playa together it sounds like we may be on the same flight together. I'm picking up that flight in Denver. If you're doing the same maybe well have...

Cindy

Sorry it's taken me a while to respond. I've been out of town and out of touch from internet access.

This sounds great. We can meet up, do some shopping, and hit the road toward Black Rock.

What time in the afternoon do you arrive in Reno?

My first year was ’98. On most accounts that doesn’t qualify as an “old timer”, just a regular burner who’s seen a few years. I’d agree, the animal has changed, but don’t think the experience has changed. People can still go out to the playa and express themselves in deeply radical ways and have peo...

Ivy - this is a good suggestion. I have toyed with the idea of making a list but I've waffled on the subject. On the one hand I want to be prepared. On the other hand I don't want to build an itinerary. I am already receiving requests from camps - "come dedicate our space" - kinds of requests. That'...

Well, yes and exactly my point.

I did see this post earlier. Seeing the maps made me very happy. I got all goofy seeing the city laid out (a lot like 1999). However, it doesn’t provide placement of specific villages and theme camps. All it shows is the general areas set aside for Theme camps. I'm hoping to have something a bit mor...

Question for the Roaming Incense Project

Are detailed maps of Black Rock available to help a project? Let me explain why I am asking. This year my gift to Burningman will be Botanical Incense - In particular dedication and or functional burns for “special spaces.” Most people's reaction to that statement is, "huh? okay, whatever." But hold...

I didn't mean to imply that functional items can not be art. They can be. It's not an issue of how the item is used. The issue is what the intent was DURING the making. I could take a Monet and use it as a room divider, that wouldn’t turn it into a tool or craft. I could take a spoon and hang it on ...

“That’s not to say the thing can be sold and money can’t change hands . . . . blah, blah, blah. But if you’re goal is about other people, you’re not making art . . . journalism . . . editorials maybe . . . but not art.” I'd like to edit that portion, it was said very poorly . . . my brain skipped ah...

Personally, I would mostly agree with Typewriter and Rob the Wop. I think the problem defining the difference between art and craft gets to be sticky because of the issue of quality. People want to feel and believe that if it’s well made it must be art. Not so. Art and quality are not the same thing...

Stuart - you are quite right, but it's still an unusual situation. Burningman is known for, and by many things, not just Self Reliance. It is also known as a place of profound kindness, broad openness, and a ubiquitous approach which says, "please come join us", "come play with us", "come participat...

Tasha Smart move on your part. As a newbie it's precarious to camp alone (and for none of the reasons you might expect). Additionally it seems that joining a camp is becoming less simple. There are a number of camps which only accept new members they personally know or who are being "sponsored" by a...

Hey Blinky Guy . . .

What's the story? You're acting as a burningman cabby service?

I'll be looking for a ride. My flight comes into Reno on Saturday. How does this work?

Are you still looking to split costs on a minivan to the playa? When is your flight to Reno.

I will fly in, on Saturday. If our dates and times work, I'll join your rideshare.

This is a long thread and I’m coming in pretty late . . . but This year my gift to Black Rock will be Botanical Incense. Most people's reaction to that statement is, "huh? okay, whatever." But stall that thought for just a minute while I explain. For several years now I've been studying and collecti...
