Re: LED vest
Update: The boyfriend and I packed an entire suitcase full of LED costumes (two vests, a tutu, a hat, a tie, and gauntlets) with the intention of checking it. We showed up at the airport super early in anticipation of the full search (which we've received before - U.S. customs clearance in Edmonton ...

Re: Bike Porn!
Okay, so... the PVC totally worked. Actually, the whole thing worked. Yes, even in the wind. I biked around in the deep playa during a dust storm for two hours, and the worst thing that happened was that the leaf flipped around in front of me, acting as a sail, and propelling me along without having...

Re: LED vest
It's all done, it has new modes (thanks to my boyfriend's programming skillz), and in a few hours, I'm flying with it... we'll see how this goes, lol. The bf made a vest, hat, and gauntlets, and they're all in the same suitcase... so I'm sure this is gonna be *FUN*!

Re: Bike Porn!
Awesome, thanks! We bought PVC last night and are going to drill holes in it today and do an official "test mount" with large zip ties. I think it'll work. Zip ties are awesome.

Re: LED vest
ALMOST DONE. Just doing some hand finishing on the liner, because I'm nit-picky, and going to work with the bf to come up with a few more modes... but I think overall, it's better than I expected!

Re: I can tell you stories...
I wore this http://www.cathodecorner.com/videocoat/ into the Detroit airport after leaving the Maker Faire there two years ago. It was, shall we say, interesting. I was asked by an airport policeman to pack it and check it, and then my whole family got SSSS searched, but they were happy to let me b...

Re: LED vest
Officially 100% awesome. I have to wholeheartedly agree!! I love it! I made a couple of super simple shrugs with faux fur and a few short strings of battery operated LED xmas lights. Not anything fancy, but it fit the bill for quick, easy, and bright. I hope we run into each other out there....

Re: LED vest
Sweet! Do you have pics of the finished products? I love seeing other peoples' projects - gives me inspiration.
My vest is nearly done. I'm just painstakingly hand-sewing the seams around the arms. I wasn't able to sew them with the machine.

Re: Bike Porn!
Hey cherryblossom, how did you attach the PVC pole, if you don't mind my asking? I've seen those bike flag pole attachments, but they look a bit flimsy! PVC seems more sturdy? I'm trying to Ikea-hack a removable shade device over my bike (on a pole); my first thought was to zip-tie the crap out of t...

Re: LED vest
If you can find a really basic vest pattern, it's fairly easy to sew. I found the pattern in a used patterns rack at the local second-hand store. I made a coat earlier this year (without lights), and it was insanity. The vest is simple! I got the lights from a shop on Alibaba and I think they were a...

Re: LED vest
The LEDs came in a strip from China (they are called "WS2812B" 5 volt); you could cut the strip to whatever lengths you want, so I did, and then soldered them back together. The plugs didn't come with them - they're from a local electronics store. I added them so that I can detached the controller/b...

Re: LED vest
In my experience TSA will be fine with the electronics. Just remember that if you are using LiPo batteries, they have to be carried in hand/cabin baggage (very important!). I've carried all sorts of electronics through customs with no problems. I always mention I have batteries (or whatever) to the...

Somehow I can't picture a happy and effective way to explain what it is to the TSA.
I wonder if I can courier it from Canada to my hotel in the U.S. It would still have to go through customs at the border though.

LED vest
It's crunch time. I have been busy this week... http://youtu.be/z9xgiX0omaU Just got this "officially working" tonight. Need to create modes and patterns, add a button to switch between modes, and somehow sew the lining on (working precariously around the wires). Do you think the TSA is gonna have a...

VultureChow, your helmet is amazing!! I am so glad you posted it! My dress is finally done! Re: LED little black dress
So I'm taking the easy route and using strands of rgb led pixels for my helmet. Got them running on a test pattern and found that one of the pixels had a blue led out. Upon inspection, there was one solder point that was missing. So I cut out a portion of the plastic covering, put a little bead of ...

Re: LED utili-tutu
So...I got my controller all put together. Double checked all my components solder points. Hooked up my power source to check the voltage (before adding the IC2)...multimeter says 1.70. Voltage is supposed to be between 4.25 and 5.25. Double and triple checked the board. I've been scouring the inte...

Great thread. Best gifts I received: Packets of Emergen-C. Fruit. A bandana with the man printed on it. A hand-blown glass bead. Hugs/high-fives. Worst: Plastic zipper-pull thingy that broke when I tried to attach it to something. Best thing I gifted: Sleeves of instant decaf coffee to the only othe...

Re: LED utili-tutu
Your tutu is awesome!!! I am so happy to hear that as an "LED noob" you are having such amazing success. I am currently working on a 'little black light dress' in the same vein as Junglesmacks' pants. I'm constructing my own dress base and light panels (LEDs are not here yet, so I'm doing all the p...

Isn't that fabric glue cool, too? Illy Dilly was the first to show it to me last year on playa and it literally saved my whole outfit. The fabric glue is THE BEST . Ever. I had planned to sew the tulle over the LEDs, but it was too crazy. The fabric glue literally saved/made the whole project possi...

Re: LED utili-tutu
Another thing: I'd pay attention to wires getting ripped off of things. I did an okay job with my LED coat last year but still had a few individual LEDs rip out — thankfully I had overdone the connections between boards with CAT-5 cable so those lasted just fine. Relatedly, get an enclosure of sort...

LED utili-tutu
I finished a Burning Man costume project this weekend and I need to share it with someone! Inspired by this video this video of an LED tutu and the whole mens utili-kilt thing, I created an LED utili-tutu. Behold: http://youtu.be/pSnr9iFBt-w&hd=1 It runs on 4xAA batteries and right now has a handful...

Re: Show me your fur (projects)
I GOT MY GLUE! It is AWESOME! Excitement!
I started gluing LEDS to a skirt, and this stuff rocks. You can actually still pull the LEDs off, if you want, but I can't imagine them falling off on their own unless they get caught on something.

Re: Start with what you have. It's easier and cheaper.
I made this for an upcoming party in February, but I think it is also potentially Burning-Man-appropriate. Three men's dress shirts later, and voila: a straitjacket. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8357/8328142723_610b128af5.jpg http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8213/8328142923_2b9f64b031.jpg I used the t...
