For what it's worth, I recommend going solo, especially for your first burn. It just worked out that way for me; I had been planning on going with a group, but things fell through for everyone except me. I even thought about not going, but I decided to go through with it. It ended up being better fo...

On a camping trip this last summer my friends and I made an effigy of Bush, swam it across the river and set it up, and then spent the afternoon taking potshots at it with a .22. I hit it right between the eyes - unfortunately, I was aiming for the chest at the time. It was still immensely satisfyin...

spirit of Burning Man, . Define please. I'll bet you a vial of Larry-sanctified playa dust that mine is different from yours. We'll both be right. I would not even try. Honestly, I would bow to a person who could succintly define the spirit of burning man. The only things I've seen that have even c...

The Guns and Dope camp scares me. Guns, dope and ostriches... that's one hell of a combo. We're very scary people. Powerful intoxicants and only slightly less powerful firearms are always a frightening mix, but when you add nature's finest landbound bird (with all due respect to the Lost Penguins) ...

Clearly, he meant non-monetary donations. Personally, I think that REQUIRING donations does run sort of contrary to the spirit of Burning Man, but whatever. You could view it as a form of barter, but then again I'm not particularly thrilled with barter in BRC either. I don't like it, but I'm not goi...

As far as nutritional bars, my vote would have to go to Odwalla bars. I took a case last year and they were great - very dense and filling. They got a little soft and sticky in the heat, but not a big problem. And most of the flavors are pretty good. Speaking of armies marching, I believe that Aztec...

I used to be a Trannie, years ago when I lived in San Luis Obispo, CA. I'm sure if I ran through it a few times it would all come back to me - the question is whether I can risk getting "I'm Going Home" stuck in my head for another five years ;) Honestly, I would be interested in participating in a ...

Guns and Dope
Sadly, many people misunderstand the Guns and Dope philosophy, and by extension the Guns and Dope camp. I think the Guns and Dope philosophy was best summed up by the motto on our Tsar cards last year (possession of which entitled the bearer to all the rights of privileges of an official Tsar): "Lik...

real leery of the flexible water containers I've seen at Target and Wally-World. I don't know how well they hold up. For my two cents, I've had bad experiences with those clear plastic flexible water containers. I bought some to use for the burn last year, and fortunately I took them on a much less...

My favorites: Dried fruit Nuts Jerky Miso soup packets Tasty Bites (which I ended up eating cold - the only thing I heated last year was water for above miso soup) Little boxes of soy milk (no need to keep cold) Powdered Gatorade I didn't take a cooler last year and don't plan to bring one this year...

Looking for ride from Portland, OR
My ride didn't pan out and I'm desperately looking for a ride from Portland, OR. The earliest I could leave would be late afternoon on Friday, 8/27, and I would have to be back in Portland by the evening of 9/7. I'm happy to pay for gas. I will be bringing a minimal amount of gear. I'm friendly, qui...
