It's that last one that puzzles me.

I think he means that the shank diameter is the same as the major, instead of minor, diameter of the screw.

Re: Preventing Bike Theft / Finding 'Lost' Bike Ideas

My friend didn't have a lock because he normally locks up with his partner, but he really had to take a shit and went off alone.

To prevent theft, what he did was decouple the chain from the chainring to make it hard to pedal off with the bike for the common theft-of-opportunity thief.

It could be too that policy changes will be more concerned with protecting volunteers, rather than drug-addled immolators from themselves, beyond what is already in place. Most volunteers are not trained to subdue a psychotic individual in these dangerous situations; it's like a store employee runni...

Why stop the ideas there? Maybe someone else can make a 40ft-tall installation "inspired by origami" made of huge sheets of slate connected together with wrought iron so that people can play billiards on the sides. Then those other people can have it demolished at the end of the burn and c...

Weird about the inconsistency. The ones I've gotten from the other shop all had 8" of threading or so.

Re: A solution to suicides (at the man burns/ temple burns)

Maybe we can co-host a calf-roping event during the main burn and the contestants can catch runners. Just like the rodeo rules, once the legs and feet are tied, the drug-addled runner has six (6) seconds to break free, otherwise it doesn't count.

BB: have you been in close to a big burn? it is damn scary and disorienting. When you head says RUN AWAY, you do and won't be looking for holes in the fence. It's certainly not something you want in your way, but I'm not thinking of something that close. The fence would be a decent distance from th...

Re: Straighten PVC or buy new?

The only reason you'd need to buy new PVC is if it broke, got too UV damaged by being in the sun for way too long (like years), or was bent so much that you couldn't fit them on your trailer/vehicle to bring them back. Otherwise, the bends are normal and may even make it easier to set up.

Re: A solution to suicides (at the man burns/ temple burns)

Fencing: This cannot be outside the 'sandmen'. They need to be able to retreat from the burn and a fence outside will trap them. It is almost impossible to re-orient yourself close to a burn to figure which way to run if they have to 'escape' and a few gates isn't going to work. The fencing does no...

Mars' wind storms happen annually, and at max speed at about 60mph, a considerable amount less than a category 1 hurricane. Token was really talking about solar winds, but yeah, as you said, the winds on Mars are not very strong because of the thin atmosphere (contrary to the depiction in The Marti...

For driving in lag screws into playa, or regular use around the house, you'll probably be fine with a 1/4" driver though.

Absolutely true, but impractical on the playa. In reality you're gonna be out doing whatever, and you're gonna go until they die, battery life expectancy be damned. Oh yeah, once you're on playa you're not gonna walk the thing home just to improve the battery's life expectancy for the other 51 week...

So i happened to be at harbor freight and home depot today. I want a cordless impact driver for my 12 lags. 20volt 1.5 amp...18volt 3 amp...its all a mystery to me. I just found the cheapest 3/8" lag screws I've seen online, without buying a box of 50. Just over $1 for 14 inch ones. While I'd love the 18" ones that FIGJAM mentions, 14 seems to be good enough so far. http://www.thefastenerstop.com/product/FS215528.html FYI: These say "zinc,"...

Re: eBikes and Burners who Ride them

Your voltmeter is probably fine, but if you're using lead-acid batteries you're over discharging them. You ought to recharge them when they reach about 12.25V, which means 50% discharge. Any more and you're reducing the life expectancy of your batteries. They shouldn't be taken below 12V if you can ...

Re: Compact Drill vs. Impact Driver for Lag Screws

Unless you're driving much larger bolts you probably don't need one. The typical 3/8" or 1/2" screws don't need a pilot hole, and may weaken the hold on the screw.

I don't know if I've really made some drastic life changes, but since getting involved with these events, the people I know through them, and the culture, it's a big chunk of what I do, associate with, and build things for. It's also made me less cynical about things.

What voltage are the batteries when the low battery light immediately turns on? After the 4 miles, I think that 12.25V would mean it's nearly 50% discharged so it should be recharged again. Not too bad riding around for 4 miles though.
