Re: Most strategic DSLR for night + video

Some cameras are dustproof by design and can vibrate off any dust that happens to get inside. That said, often the lenses will allow (suck) dust in especially if they're telephoto lenses. Even on P+S cameras I often would turn it on inside a bag or something just in case it was sucking in dust via t...

Re: Cultural Course Correcting post by Marian Goodell

However, convenience is relative and is affected by numerous outside factors which creates very real ambiguities that the BRC Cultural Direction role players are probably aware of, for example: 1) Burners should set up their own accommodations (tents) to experience what it is like to become part of...

Looks good, but you might want to avoid the insulation on the ducting. The insulation can be MOOPy, the fatter pipe can be a pain to position, and generally won't improve the performance much.

Re: Mountain bikers... full suspension or hardtail?

I'd only switch to a mountain bike if I weren't able to gear down my cruiser to something more easy to pedal or power through some dunes. Otherwise, I would not miss the mountain bike handlebars or the seats. Apehangers and a cruiser seat are wonderful.

radically self reliant people from far away lands using “public transportation” should not be singled out for bullshit ridicule. (emphasis mine) If and only if they meet that qualification. I just don't think this is really the case for most riders though. You can only bring so much to even survive...

Yeah, I thought they had gone to a lottery-like system a couple years ago specifically to avoid these server issues. I also thought it went smoother in those years too, but the BMORG can never be satisfied to allow that to happen.

Re: The basic problem with modern BRC

It's impossible to police people paying other camp members for services. The whole "dues" thing is a gray area and forbidding it is unenforceable. Even banning Humano was probably more about their LNT record than any kind of fees they were supposedly charging their members, despite whatever the post...

You can start preparing now for next year, and also get involved in some of your Burning Man regionals (the local burns which go on in spring and summer), which usually require far less preparation than the main burn, but give you a good taste (or in some ways, a better taste) of these events and cu...

I'm fine with the airport, just not with using it to ferry attendees to the event. People can fly their private planes there and maybe like a couple personal passengers but that is it.

Re: Scanner for Rangers, ESD, etc?

A general search on Google will probably reveal what you need to listen into scanner broadcasts and stuff. If the police or whoever don't want you to listen in they'll used secure channels though, so whatever chatter you tune into won't carry anything particularly juicy.

If you subsidize something, you get more of it, and so it has been with mass transit and other mechanisms to encourage people to treat this event as a regular tourist destination. The barrier to entry to the event was formerly your ability to bring what you needed to survive out there, not obtain th...

Regardin the trash problem on Nevadas roads. There is already an unused tool to prevent/punish those who lose trash along Nevada's roads. NRS 484D.850 says in part "No vehicle shall be driven or moved on any highway unless such vehicle is so constructed or loaded as to prevent any of its load from ...

Well, then you'll need to bring additional grey water vessels, properly marked.

You could also bring a big barrel and try to get USS to pump it for a fee.

Don't provide what you are not willing or able to pack out yourself, unless you've guaranteed that others will pick up that slack. I hate it when people knife those 2-gallon containers. If you want to pour out more at a time just pull the spout off the end and it flows freely with a huge hole. It's ...

Foot-pads: If the foot pad has a hole where the pipe gets inserted is hollow near the end, could you just drill the foot-pad into the ground through a hole in the bottom where the pipe would slide in? Then it would only use one, and the foot pad would serve its same purpose. You could also drill a h...

This brings up a further question though - are turnkeys excused if they bring a substantial gift to the playa? The gray area for me is the line that separates turnkey camps from camps-with-high-dues-and-lots-of-facilities. Rather than oppose whatever people want to spend on a burn, and other people...

Hmm, I might check out the mule tape method, especially if a simple square knot is sufficient to keep it looped. I didn't find cutting chain links was too terrible with a bolt cutter, but my links were not made of as high-quality chain as those mentioned earlier, and I only used two links per screw.

I get the principled argument that the org shouldn't do anything to make attending easier. But as with most things, what seems to be black and white is often really more about shades of gray, and about where you think the balance should lie between conflicting goals. In this case, the conflict come...

Air travel is the only mode of transportation that helps dramatically relieve congestion on the highway. It's not going anywhere. (note that this is not directed at you, but a general rant) When you subsidize something you get more of it. In this case, more people attending the event with the expec...
