Re: Not Going to Burning Man at Burning Man

I saw some cool art when I went out, but often going out to see art becomes an exercise in "oh wow, saw that, yeah, that was pretty cool," "oh yeah, we can climb that for a little bit after locking our bikes... okay, let's go find something else," and so on and so forth. I still never see everything...

Back when the thread was last active, that vehicle was only nine (9) years old! Now it's old enough to drive itself.

Re: Fresh Spam Accounts

Even maybe just a simple question at the end of the sign-up screen that they have to answer, like "name one of the principles," would probably eliminate a huge percentage of them (unless this is already being done; it's been a long time since I signed up). Might even eliminate some potential "low ef...

Re: Reasonable Honoraria Funding Request Vs. Total Budget

A friend hosted a small workshop on proposal writing for BM and his advice, according to his research, was that 30% was a good percentage of the total budget to be covered by the grant. Also, that durable goods (e.g. tools, generators, etc.) are frowned upon as budget items.

Re: Biggest MOOP in the history of Burning Man

From what friends who were there told me, they did have periods where they had a private party or parties for donors. There were also capacity issues as it attracted a lot of people. A problem was probably that the plane was not "open" all the time, so there were only certain times that people could...

Re: Biggest MOOP in the history of Burning Man

Gotta make the "Tsar" Mutant Vehicle: a mutant vehicle so huge and unreasonable as to be unfunctional. Some may say it has already been made. Didn't they transport the Space Shuttle on one of those 747s? We could strap one of those on top too! Or maybe the 747 on top of a giant Space Shuttle just to...

Since the wings have been chopped off, they should stand the 747 on end to make it look like a rocket or space shuttle.

Re: Biggest MOOP in the history of Burning Man

Yeah, I'm kind of in "meh" territory myself. While I recognize that it was a major feat bringing something like that to the playa (and eventually getting it off it), as an art car or exhibit it's just a big -- really big -- hacked up amputated plane. I kind of want to see something more, or evolving.

Re: Biggest MOOP in the history of Burning Man

After having brought more and more of the plane each year, I believe what was brought this year represents the final scope of the project. While I'm sure they'll want to bring it back, and that it was quite a feat to bring it, I kind of want to see them either do more with it or not bring it back. Y...

No alcohol there even, but I was once asked by someone if I had some and my BM narc-detection-senses started tingling, but then I just truthfully said that I didn't have any. Anyway, what the hell, did I look like I was inebriated?

I usually head for the self-greeter line. I know it has taken away greeter jobs, and the automated voice behind monitor always pisses me off telling me how to burn before I put my shit in the bag, but it just seems to save me time.

Re: Voice Recognition AI Expertise

You can train basic stuff using machine learning using something like Tensorflow. There are examples and such. It'll take quite a bit of training data, or the data that is often freely available, but it'll help you a lot to have an idea of what you want the models to do before you dive into it.

Re: Biggest MOOP in the history of Burning Man

It was a pretty big fuckup not having an adequate plan to get the plane off the playa, the paperwork in order, and the research/testing/surveying/engineering/etc. to ensure that the plane could physically leave (or even enter) the site without much disturbance. Part of that was the BMORG not requiri...

Re: Greeter Bypass For Early Entry

Yeah, I could see the need for a quick entry line bypassing the greeters station (note gate though) if it's not that important to get your hugs and all that. Maybe it'd come in handy for multiple trips, etc. or people returning. Is it even that bad? I remember that I actually had to change lanes to ...

It's not as if the money and resources thrown at that project would have or could have directly translated into other projects. People donated and people put their time into that particular project. Maybe people wouldn't have put such efforts into many smaller projects, as compared to the grand sing...

Some camps have shipping containers that are purchased ($3,600) and stored offsite each year to be delivered on-playa by the service ($700/yr fee). It's called the BRC Storage Program. It may be that. Otherwise it might just be a private company that does it.

Re: Salon takes a hatchet to Burning Man?

I remember bringing a high-powered hand-held laser to BM and using it, including at the Man burn. While cool, the unwanted attention it brought, with every person and their hubby wanting to try it out made it so I was really reluctant to use it. It certainly didn't add much to the event painting the...
