Re: A lot of Us want to go there!

I gave up on all that funny-money business when they I could no longer exchange my Betty Crocker box tops for BM tickets. I can't believe they shut that down in 2006!

Re: AJEEPGAL FROM CALI - VIRGIN BURNER

There will be, no doubt, some camps seeking members that spring up on the forum. However, your best bet is to attend and get involved in some of the Burning Man regionals that take place before the main burn, and see if you can find some people you jive with. It'll also help you get involved with st...

How about you come back when you've actually done some research yourself?

Or don't come back or invite those other 50+ clueless people either.

Re: 15' wall made of polystyrene / styrofoam?

You should probably not construct anything out of styrofoam for use on the playa. That material is too liable to break apart and become MOOP unless you're planning on coating it with something. If you need something like foam, you might want to look into something like expanded polyethylene or somet...

Re: The 2017 Bah—Humbug! Thread, where we deal with Depression and Stuff

Ugh, this is so true. I feel like I leave town in summer, and return home and BAM! Autumn. Even though our summer runs late, it's still disorienting. It's like the real end of the year. I was reading an article wherein the author half-jokingly proposed that Christmas be moved to January, to give ev...

Yeah, one 12V, 125AH lead acid battery only yields 3 hours. So it's about five of those.

Re: Using EV (car) batteries to store power on playa

That Ford Fusion Energi battery pack only has a 7.6kWh capacity. If your AC unit consumed as little as 500W of power, even with 100% efficient conversion that would only last you about 15 hours. That's about 2 gallons of fuel on a generator in eco mode. You'd probably be better off just powering a n...

Trump is just a master huckster that knows how to read a crowd. He'll say whatever it takes to get votes or agreement without actually believing anything of it himself. He's one of many recent sleazebag clowns such as Erdogan, Chavez, Berlusconi, and Duterte that should having their faces featured o...

Re: Using EV (car) batteries to store power on playa

You should only use the generator (car or standalone) to do the bulk charging on your battery (up to 80%), where they can provide all the current they can to charge up the battery. After that, the absorption and float charge stages use less and less current, wasting the power provided by the generat...

Re: Compact Drill vs. Impact Driver for Lag Screws

I think I've read that as the distinction as well (other than the size of the tool too). It still seems like it's just a hand-wavy distinction though, since the tool is distinctly different and has little resemblance to either a screwdriver or a wrench, and yet both variants have the same form facto...

Re: The 2017 Bah—Humbug! Thread, where we deal with Depression and Stuff

Take supplemental Vitamin D3 to combat the SAD, especially if you're in the grey wastes of the Northwest during this season. Right after the burn I start dreading the shortening days. Then there's an extra punch to the gut with the reversal of DST. 5:30 PM and it feels like 10PM. It used to not affe...

Re: Time to phase out glitter

Glitter is probably good to avoid, but aren't a major source of microplastics. Tires, clothing, cosmetics and other such things are a much greater source of plastic pollution. Glitter is far more visible though. It's kind of like ending the BM event to save the world from air pollution. It just does...

Re: Segways in Burning Man

As echoed above, I'd rather have those Segways than those noisy, motorized scooters. I'd also rather have them than those bikes that are abandoned without lights in the middle of the playa; I assume people would take care of their $3000 ride better than that $30 bike.

You shouldn't use Photobucket for images on forums anymore. Quite frankly, the site/service can outright die now that they're destroying internet forum history by blocking links to images.

I'll have to see what sales come up at Home Despot though.

Fairy lights are nice because they strike a nice balance of cheap, bright, durable, long-lasting, nice colors, and battery-powered. They're often a great replacement for EL wire, which lacks many of the above properties except maybe nice colors and battery powered. If you want "solid" look...

Ah, that explains it. Yeah, those indicators can drain the battery. I did notice that my ol' Subaru would have a semi-depleted battery after some weeks of disuse because of the alarm light or some other low-but-still-power subsystem. What about using some cheapo solar panel to keep things topped off...
