Re: There's nothing wrong with basing cleanup deposits on exodus cleanup results
Mmm yeah, the camp operators should not have an incentive to throw the game so to speak. I'd hope that the bad MOOP score would negatively impact their ability to get placed, but a yellow score isn't usually enough. They could just switch the deposit policy to not staying to the end for cleanup as w...

Mmmm. But if a newbie, who knows no better, is led to believe that buying an all-inclusive resort package is the burner way; do we, as a community, not have a responsibility to respond? That state of willing ignorance has no place on the playa. I almost see these fleecing camps as liberating money ...

Re: No Presale for 2019?
I'm okay with the concept of a presale. The main failure of the BMORG is that they don't make that premium price pay for access to buy those tickets early, rather than the sticker price of the ticket, which depreciates to the value of a main sale ticket the moment the sale is over. It would even sav...

Re: Bungee ball alternative?
That running rigging works well, and does a good job of distributing the loads, but does take extra time because you have to feed the cord through many eyelets. Maybe it won't be so bad if you use multiple shorter spans. You could also use karabiners or some such to just clip-attach the cord to the ...

Re: Plug&Play Camp PlayaSkool - Camp Probably intentionally left Moop to keep deposit and legally steal money from peopl
I'm going to apply Hanlon's Razor here and make no assumptions about malicious intent on part of the organizers of PlayaSkool no matter what I feel about the whole PnP model and whom it caters to. It is pure unfounded speculation that the organizers of that camp defrauded customers by planting or le...

Re: Ideating a meal prep service for BM 2019
Little about burning man pisses me off more than Europeans or anyone who lives too far away saying “but I can’t go if there aren’t services provided”. Well, yeah. Then it’s too hard and you can’t do it! I can’t go to your fucking events in New Zealand or Amsterdam or wherever-the-fuck, it’s too far...

Re: Ideating a meal prep service for BM 2019
I'd love it if such services were investigated in secret and the "participants" in such schemes were identified, not just the people running them. Then those people would have their tickets voided, or even better, get evicted from the event. Yes, I want burns ruined. I want to see lots of social med...

That saying is part of a larger quote by Lao Tsu, in the Tao Te Ching: Those who know do not talk. Those who talk do not know. Keep your mouth closed. Guard your senses. Temper your sharpness. Simplify your problems. Mask your brightness. Be at one with the dust of the earth. This is primal union. H...

The stickers and other media are definitely some under and/or not-overtly appreciated goodies that really add to the whole experience. Sure there are those among us who essentially leave the book and map in the car after we receive it, never to open it again, but people do use the books, the maps, a...

You may not find links here, but there are usually regionals in the state you reside, along with Facebook groups and other social media platforms. The regionals are a great way to connect with local burners and get involved in groups, events, etc. especially in San Francisco.

Yeah man, that's like super easy to identify. A photo showing only half the glasses, a front view, no special markings, no brand, brown -- just brown. I guess it has a little triangular metal thing near the hinge?

Re: Not Going to Burning Man at Burning Man
I saw some cool art when I went out, but often going out to see art becomes an exercise in "oh wow, saw that, yeah, that was pretty cool," "oh yeah, we can climb that for a little bit after locking our bikes... okay, let's go find something else," and so on and so forth. I still never see everything...

Even maybe just a simple question at the end of the sign-up screen that they have to answer, like "name one of the principles," would probably eliminate a huge percentage of them (unless this is already being done; it's been a long time since I signed up). Might even eliminate some potential "low ef...

Re: Reasonable Honoraria Funding Request Vs. Total Budget
A friend hosted a small workshop on proposal writing for BM and his advice, according to his research, was that 30% was a good percentage of the total budget to be covered by the grant. Also, that durable goods (e.g. tools, generators, etc.) are frowned upon as budget items.

From what friends who were there told me, they did have periods where they had a private party or parties for donors. There were also capacity issues as it attracted a lot of people. A problem was probably that the plane was not "open" all the time, so there were only certain times that people could...

Gotta make the "Tsar" Mutant Vehicle: a mutant vehicle so huge and unreasonable as to be unfunctional. Some may say it has already been made. Didn't they transport the Space Shuttle on one of those 747s? We could strap one of those on top too! Or maybe the 747 on top of a giant Space Shuttle just to...

Since the wings have been chopped off, they should stand the 747 on end to make it look like a rocket or space shuttle.

Re: Biggest MOOP in the history of Burning Man
Yeah, I'm kind of in "meh" territory myself. While I recognize that it was a major feat bringing something like that to the playa (and eventually getting it off it), as an art car or exhibit it's just a big -- really big -- hacked up amputated plane. I kind of want to see something more, or evolving.

After having brought more and more of the plane each year, I believe what was brought this year represents the final scope of the project. While I'm sure they'll want to bring it back, and that it was quite a feat to bring it, I kind of want to see them either do more with it or not bring it back. Y...

No alcohol there even, but I was once asked by someone if I had some and my BM narc-detection-senses started tingling, but then I just truthfully said that I didn't have any. Anyway, what the hell, did I look like I was inebriated?

You can train basic stuff using machine learning using something like Tensorflow. There are examples and such. It'll take quite a bit of training data, or the data that is often freely available, but it'll help you a lot to have an idea of what you want the models to do before you dive into it.

Re: Biggest MOOP in the history of Burning Man
It was a pretty big fuckup not having an adequate plan to get the plane off the playa, the paperwork in order, and the research/testing/surveying/engineering/etc. to ensure that the plane could physically leave (or even enter) the site without much disturbance. Part of that was the BMORG not requiri...
