We use a vacuum sealer every year to pack good meals with minimal garbage. It's quite common within my local community of burners actually.

I wouldn't worry about compacting your trash, but I do recommend getting something with a lid to keep your garbage in (think ammo can).

It's also going to be pretty awesome during the day.
