Re: The basic problem with modern BRC

I think Simon’s scenario is the only hope for reversing the deterioration and dilution of the event. I certainly think it's the quickest route. A couple of years of difficult nastiness that gets lots of press, and many of the instagrammers are going to seek out easier photo ops while declaring Burn...

Re: Mountain bikers... full suspension or hardtail?

Last year was a remarkably hard and durable surface that was easy to ride. It isn't always that way. Many years, the playa is more of a "potato chip" texture that crumbles easily and quickly turns into seas of dust dunes. Heck, in '17 the dust was six inches deep in parts of the 9:00 side. When it's...

I'm not sure how many specifically from the Steamboat area attend (I know a few who have gone in the past, but no longer do). If you want to meet some relatively local burners in person you might be able to share with, I organize a Northern Colorado burner social meetup the 2nd Thursday of each mont...

Well, in that case, I'm a fan of the 5 gallon bucket. Easily obtained, easy to fill and empty, not too heavy to move around, and can be sealed up tight.

If the pressure fit/pry off lids annoy you, gamma lids aren't all that expensive an upgrade.

Re: How much grey water to plan for?

Captain Goddammit hit the nail on the head. My one suggested addition? Don't supply fresh water either - for washing or drinking. Make people be responsible for bringing their own water as well as taking away their gray water. It's the simplest and most reliable way to make sure everyone is both awa...

Re: Small Theme Camp looking for a Village to join

So, a few logistical thoughts/questions based on the new layout... First, putting all the cars around the back perimeter sounds great in theory, but typically not everyone arrives and leaves at the same time. You'll need to account for that, and I'd encourage you to think about what happens if someo...

Re: When is the book published?

Playa events are published online long before the event, and the online listing is in fact far more complete - the WWWW only contains a fraction of those listings.

The event database is also made available to developers, which is how it makes it into apps like iBurn and Time To Burn.

Oh, I recognized the sarcasm, and I absolutely agree with you that being a cool guy doesn't excuse that kind of behavior. It's appalling just how many responses to that journal article seem to think it should, though. I'm just trying to draw the distinction I see between one person who did something...

I don't particularly care whether or not he's a cool guy. He blew it, big time. As for Ms. Raiser, I can absolutely see being thrilled to be invited by a friend to his runway show, and excited to hear that his experiences at Burning Man helped inspire his line. There are lots of subtle ways a design...

Re: Help with 36'X30' EMT conduit flat top shade structure

Most of my experience has been with carports, though I've helped with a couple of flat-tops, but in either case I've never seen footpads twist around the lag screw. Did you have them screwed down flush and tight? If you want to prevent that entirely, you'd probably do just fine with a large nail or ...

Re: Cultural Course Correcting post by Marian Goodell

To the size of the event, I suggested in my draft EIS input that 34 be widened to 3 lanes from the 447 Y to 8 mile. That would provide a faster drain out of vehicles in an emergency where they could be staged on 447 N of the Y, and it better loads 447 N and S on exodus. Exodus falls under the Nevad...

What will kill the event, or at least as we know it, is having its culture decay to the point that this event no longer distinguishes itself from other large-scale events, other than location. Part of that distinction is that attending the event requires more than just paying money. That decay is n...

There were mooches on the playa in my first year (damn, 15 years ago now), they still exist today. I'm glad that my experience has been that those people continue to be the exceptions rather than the norm, and my experience has been that it's maybe even a lower number than it used to be. Time to do some radical self reliance building/engineering so she can wash her hair. :) If it's any comfort, you can let her know we're in the same boat. Papa Bear you are going to disappoint many hundreds of burners. I hope you're coming anyway. Come find us at Tiger Man camp.
We'll be in Kidsville again this year, so hopefully not far away. I'll definitely be over, assuming I don't completely break myself during build week yet again.

I have not heard good things about the cordless Harbor Freight models for playa lag screw use.

That said, their 1/2" corded model that sells for around $35 during many of their sales has done well for me for the past 5 years.

I hate to say this, but Astral Headwash will not be an option this year. The founder and his wife have a once-in-a-lifetime family event to attend, and can't do both that and Burning Man. You never know when and where something will break. So planning on that front in the context of going to BM is obviously not very doable. In extreme cases, sure. But while you may not be prepared for a bike frame tube to break, you should at least be bringing a spare tube and a patch kit (and know ...
